Mustangs Collect GNAC Sweep of Rams

NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida earned their second Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory of the season with a 3-0 sweep of Suffolk University as they split their matches at a GNAC women's volleyball tri-match on Saturday afternoon at Simmons College.

Mount Ida suffered a sweep at the hands of the host Sharks, who also beat Suffolk 3-0 in the first game of the day to take both of their home matches.

Game Two: Mount Ida 3, Suffolk 0

In the final game of the day, Mustang freshman Shayna Vallauri (Morris Plain, N.J.) recorded nine kills to help pace the Mustangs to a 3-0 victory over Suffolk. The Mustangs were victorious by scores of 25-22, 25-15 and 25-17.

Vallauri would round out the afternoon leading all players on three sides with a combined 15 kills on the day. Senior Nicole Peixoto (New Bedford, Mass.) collected 30 setting assists, while freshman Mary Kate Reidy (Agawam, Mass.) recorded six kills.

 Krista Iacobucci picked up nine kills in the game, bringing her total to 14 on the afternoon for the Rams. 

Suffolk senior Glamarys Sierra (Carolina, Puerto Rico) had 12 setting assists in game two to along with 13 from game one to bring her total to 25 on the day.

 Game One: Simmons 3, Mount Ida 0

Simmons won in three straight sets, posting scores of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-18.

Vallauri collected a team-high six kills in the setback for the Mustangs.  Junior Kelcey Koolman (Bedford, N.H.) led all players with 18 digs, while senior Lauren Rushalski (Brick, N.J.) also added 16 in the contest. Rushalski also picked up a pair of service aces in the defeat for the Mustangs.

Freshman Emmee Ashby (Payson, Ariz.) notched six kills in game two to help lead the Sharks to the afternoon sweep as they topped Mount Ida College 3-0 in the middle game of Saturday's tripleheader.

 Ashby also picked up a pair of service aces and tallied eight blocking assists as the victory improved the Sharks to an 11-13 overall record on the season. 

Duke recorded 14 more assists in the second game to bring her Saturday total to 32. 

Sophomore Alex Itasaka (Bradford, Mass.) finished with a team-high 14 digs on the defensive side for the Sharks. 

Mount Ida moves to an 8-19 overall record on the season and 2-7 in the conference. 

All three teams will be back in non-conference action later this week. Mount Ida will be back in action on Tuesday evening as they head to Salem State University at 7:00pm.

Simmons will round out their regular season on Thursday evening as they travel to WPI at 7:00pm. Suffolk will travel to Lesley University on Monday evening at 8:00pm.
