Ida Swept By Hosts on 1st Day of Colonials Tournament

DANBURY, Conn. – Host Western Connecticut State University asserted their home court advantage by sweeping Mount Ida College in the Mustang's first match of 2014 and the final contest in the opening day of the Colonials' tip-off tournament. 

Western took the first set 25-15, then controlled play in set two, winning 25-4, and pulling away from a two-point lead to close the match with a 25-13 third set win. 

Junior Taylor Davis (Machiasport, Maine) led the way for Mount Ida with 5 kills, while senior setter Nicole Peixoto (New Bedford, Mass.) handed out 15 assists. On the defensive end, junior libero Kelcey Koolman (Bedford, N.H.) chipped in nine digs. 

Senior Nicole Batakis (East Longmeadow, Mass.) chipped in four kills for the Mustangs, and freshman Mary Kate Reidy (Agawam, Mass.) notched three kills and seven digs in her first collegiate action. 

Cady Cordes registered a team-high 7 kills to lead Western, while Brittany Steele added six kills for the Colonials, who hit .406 for the match, including .520 in the second set in which they didn't make an attacking error. 

Danielle Kaminsky handed out 31 assists and Nina Wojtkiewicz dug out 11 balls to lead the Colonials (2-0) to victory. 

The Mustangs will be back on the court at WCSU on Saturday for games against Brandeis at 10:00 AM and Purchase State at 2:30 PM.
