Mustangs Downed by Rams, Wildcats at JWU Tri-Match

Providence, R.I. – The Mount Ida College women's volleyball team traveled to the Wildcat Center on Monday afternoon for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match.

Mount Ida opened up against the hosts Johnson & Wales University, and suffered a 3-0 defeat by scores 26-24, 25-16, 25-20.

The afternoon game saw the Mustangs battle Suffolk University, and the Rams used scores of 25-12, 25-12, 25-20 to hand Mount Ida a 3-0 defeat.

Against Johnson & Wales, Mustang senior Abbey Fedigan (New Fairfield, Conn.) hit .571 for the match, registering four kills with no errors, while Sophomore Haley Paradis (Hampton, N.H.) paced Mount Ida with six kills and six digs.

Sophomore Kelsey Koolman (Bedford, N.H.) notched 11 digs in the setback for the Mustangs to led the team defensively, and Nicole Peixoto (New Bedford, Mass.) handed out nine assists.

The Mustangs held a lead for the majority of the first game against the Wildcats, who tied the set at 23 apiece. Mount Ida tied the game against a 24, but a service error and a kill gave the Wildcats the victory.

Junior Alyssa Drapeau (Biddeford, Maine) led the way for Johnson & Wales in the win against Mount Ida, tallying eight kills and three digs.  Senior Giselle Cram (Vega Alta, Puerto Rico) notched 10 digs while senior Natasha Finkbeiner (Belgrade, Mont.) and sophomore Kellen Tensen (New Canaan, Conn.) combined for 21 set assists in the win for the Wildcats. 

In the second match of the day, Koolman registered a match-high 14 digs, while Fedigan, Hillary Kostner (Corona, Calif.) and Alysha Dunbar (Quincy, Mass.) led the way offensively with four kills apiece.

Peixoto had ten assists and served two of the Mustang's six service aces in the loss.

Freshman Savannah Carpenter (Weston, Conn.) paced Suffolk in the win, recording a match-high 11 kills with four blocks while junior Tori Brillaud (North Andover, Mass.) had seven kills and seven digs in the win for the Rams.  

Mount Ida is 3-21 for the season and 0-8 in league play while Suffolk is 12-12 overall and 3-5 in the GNAC. 

The Mustangs will be off until next Saturday afternoon when they travel to Quincy, Mass. for a non-conference tri-match at Eastern Nazarene. The Lions and Mustangs meet at 11:00 AM, followed by a showdown with Southern Maine at 1:00 PM.
