Tough Regional Opponents Take Two Matches from Mustangs

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In their first day of play at the Johnson and Wales Invitational tournament, the Mount Ida college women's volleyball team lost a pair of matches to some of the toughest opponents in the New England region.

The Mustangs dropped their first match by a 3-0 score to Keene State University before also being swept in the nightcap by the University of New England.
 

Keene State 3, Mount Ida 0

Hillary Kostner (Corona, Calif.) paced Mount Ida with six kills and Nicole Peixoto (New Bedford, Mass.) notched 17 assists, but the Owls had too much offense, winning 25-15, 25-17, 25-9.

Peixoto also had a team-high six digs and one service ace, while libero Kelcey Koolman (Bedford, N.H.) dug out four balls and added two kills.

Angela Silveri (Poughquag, N.Y.) led the Owls with 9 kills, while also collecting four of the Owl's 17 service aces.

Alexis Michal (Windham, N.H.) had a team-high five aces and also had ten assists and four digs in the victory. 

UNE 3, Mount Ida 0

The Nor'easters also held Mount Ida below 20 points in each of the sets, winning by scores of 25-14, 25-15 and 25-19.

Senior Abbey Fedigan (New Fairfield, Conn.) led the Mustangs with seven kills, while freshman Kellie Schroeder (North Grafton, Mass.) had three kills and was one of three Mount Ida players with six digs.

She was joined in that category by fellow freshmen Lucianna Medici (Riverside, R.I.) and Maryssa Dwyer (Quincy, Mass.), while Peixoto had thirteen assists in a losing effort. 

Angie Brunette (North Andover, Mass.) led the UNE attack with 12 digs and Maria Kuehl (Middleton, N.H.) had 29 assists and seven digs. 

Kirsta Adie (Tyngsboro, Mass.) led all players with nine digs in the Nor'easter victory.

The Mustangs (2-8) will continue to test themselves on Saturday when they meet Wheaton College and Middlebury to finish off their weekend in Providence.
