Saturday, October 27, 2012 (Newton, Massachusetts) - The Mount Ida College women's volleyball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 opening victory against visiting University of St. Joseph (CT) by scores of 25-21, 16-25, 25-22 and 25-22. The Mustangs would go on to lose the final leg of the day to visiting league member Emmanuel College falling 3-1 by scores of 23-25, 22-25, 25-22 and 24-26.
Mount Ida women's volleyball ends the 2012 season with a 12-16 overall record with a GNAC slate of 6-6 heading into the opening round of the league post-season tournament against hosting Emerson College on Halloween (October 31, 2012) in Boston, Massachusetts with match time coming at 7:00 p.m.
The Mount Ida College Athletic Department honored three seniors before the tri-match. Jennifer Ferreira (Shirley, MA/Ayer), Toni Vegiard (South Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) and Julie Smith (Richmond, RI/Chariho) were the student-athlete's recognized for their contributions to the program through the past four seasons.
In the opening match one victory against the Blue Jays Mount Ida was led offensively by Ferreira with 16 kills on 49 attempts adding two service aces and 15 digs. Sophomore hitter Shay Collins (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) notched 10 kills and 11 digs along with a block assist. Junior middle hitter Abbey Fedigan (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) notched six kills and a solo block. Sophomore setter Nicole Peixoto (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) dished out a team-high 22 assists. Freshman libero Kelcey Koolman (Bedford, NH/Bedford) recorded 15 digs respectively.
In the finale 3-1 loss to the visiting Saints, the Mustangs were led offensively by Ferreira again as well as freshman middle hitter Trudy Goetchius (North Andover, MA/Lawrence Vocational Tech.) both adding 16 kills each. Goetchius would add 19 digs and two service aces as well. Peixoto led the offense for Mount Ida with a team-high 27 assists while Koolman would led the back row with 24 digs.
