Friday, September 21, 2012 (Beverly, Massachusetts) - On the opening day of the M.I.T. Invitational, The Mount Ida College women's volleyball team dropped two back-to-back losses to start the tournament starting with a 3-0 loss to Endicott College by scores of 10-25, 11-25 and 13-25 Friday evening in Beverly, Massachusetts. Mount Ida would go on to face visiting Bowdoin College falling again 3-0 (17-25, 16-25 and 15-25).
Mount Ida will face Bates College and Brandeis University Saturday to finish out the tournament. The Mustangs drop to an overall record of 2-6.
Endicott was able to ride the scorching hot hand of Callie Dolan (Westford, Mass.) throughout the match as the junior outside was able to register 13 kills on 25 error-free swings for a .520 average. The Gulls offense on a whole was very impressive as the team hit .300 while limiting Mt. Ida to -.146.
Freshman setter Alleigh VandeMerkt (Riverside, IL) showed great decision making in guiding the team to the impressive average. VandeMerkt was able to tally 27 assists in the three set match, good enough for an average of 9.00/set. The setter was also able to contribute on defense by picking up six digs.
Senior Ashley Norley (Sudbury, MA) was once again the defensive anchor as she was able to dig up 16 Mustang attacks.
Freshman Mackenzie Guerre (Carlsbad, CA) was an offensive force as she notched four kills on eight attempts. Freshman Lexi Watts (San Diego, CA) and junior Carly Beers (Traverse City, MI) were impressive from the serving line as they were able to collect four and three aces respectively.
Mount Ida was led offensively by Shay Collins (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) and Trudy Goetchius (North Andover, MA/Lawrence Vocational) who tallied four kills each. Nicole Peixoto (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) and Julie Smith (Richmond, RI/Chariho) each recorded six assists as Jennifer Ferreira (Shirley,MA/Ayer) collected eight digs.
In a tough loss to Bowdoin in the second match of the evening, Mount Ida was led by Ferreira with eight kills on 29 attempts and six digs. Senior defensive specialist Toni Vegiard recorded a team-high nine digs while Smith dished out eight assists.
