WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL DROPS SEASON OPENER TO CORSAIRS

Saturday, September 1, 2012 - The Mount Ida College women's volleyball team dropped their season opener this past weekend at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Saturday afternoon falling 3-1 by scores of 24-26, 18-15, 26-24 and 23-25.  The Mustangs fall to an overall record of 0-1 and have yet to compete in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest while the hosts improve to 1-0.

Mount Ida dropped the opening two sets (24-26, 18-25) but went on to capture a game three victory winning 26-24.  The Corsairs came out and closed the match down in game four with a 25-23 win for the 3-1 final.

The Mustangs saw outstanding individual performances from senior hitter Jennifer Ferreira (Shirley, MA/Ayer) with 18 kills on 41 attempts with only four errors for .341 hitting percentage on the day.  Senior Julie Smith (Richmond, RI/Chariho) and sophomore Nicole Peixoto (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) rotated time in the setter position combining for 28 assists, 15 for Piexoto and 13 for Smith.  Ferriera would also add a game high 13 digs while senior defensive specialist Toni Vegiard (South Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) added eight digs.  Freshman middle hitter Trudy Goetchius (North Andover, MA/Lawrence Vocational) recorded four solo blocks and three block assists.

The Mustangs will host their first home event of the season under the direction of first year Head Coach Craig Martin Tuesday evening against visiting Framingham State University with match time slated for 6:00 p.m.
