MUSTANGS MAKE LATE CHARGE, FALL IN DECIDING GAME 3-2

The Mount Ida College women's volleyball team dropped their first loss of the season to visiting non-conference UMASS-Dartmouth falling 3-2 by scores 25-11, 25-18, 25-14, 25-22, 15-9 Saturday afternoon in Newton, Massachusetts.  The Mustangs drop to an overall record of 1-1 while the Corsairs capture their first victory of the season. 

The Mustangs went ahead in game one but lost momentum falling in the next two games trailing 2-1.  Mount Ida would fight back and capture an impressive 25-22 game four victory to send the match into a deciding game five.  Mount Ida tied the score in the final set at 9-9, but the visitors took over scoring the final five points for the 3-2 match win.

The Mustangs were led offensively by senior captain Rachelle Gilbert (Corunna, IN/Dekalb) with 19 kills while fellow senior Cody Fusco (San Francisco, CA/San Francisco Waldorf) dished out 31 assists.  Sophomore newcomer Abbey Fedigan (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) was solid in front of the net with two solo blocks and two block assists.  Junior libero Toni Vegiard (South Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) added 24 digs. 

For the Corsairs, senior Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/Case) led the offensive charge adding 14 kills while freshman Caitlin Bein (Millbury, MA/Millbury) added 10 digs defensively.  Sophomore Tahirah Gibson (Norwood, MA/Norwood) manned the net chipping in two solo blocks and two block assists.   Junior setter Jessica Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) dished out 31 assists.

The Mustangs will get on the road and head to non-conference Framingham State University this Tuesday with game time slated for 7:00 p.m.
