NEW LONDON, Conn. – Jamie Overoye (Lowell, Mass.) and Haley Falzone (Maynard, Mass.) each recorded their first collegiate goals in a 2-0 shutout victory for the Mustangs over Mitchell College on Wednesday afternoon.
AnnaMarie Seiler (Biddeford, Me.) and Mikayla Lovering (Colchester, Vt.) paired up for the assist on Overoye's goal in the 15th minute of the first half while Falzone's tally came in the second half when she faked out a Mariner defender to her left and got in behind the outside back before beating the keeper back post.
With the win, Mount Ida improves to 1-3 on the season while Mitchell drops to 0-2 with neither team yet to play a conference match.
With the 1-0 lead in hand at the break thanks to Overoye, the Mustangs added to the margin in the 56th minute when Falzone picked up her first marker of the season.
Mitchell produced a pair of opportunities later in the second half, both of which came within a two-minute span. Jacquelyn White (Danville, Vt.) got a good look from the right side but saw her shot slip through the back post and out of bounds for a goal kick. Moments later she chased down a ball in the box, but Parkin came out to challenge and deflected the shot at point-blank range before Rachel Lambert (Lebanon, Conn.) cleared the ball for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs controlled possession of the ball for the majority of the contest while also out shooting the hosts, 24-5. Mount Ida managed five corners in the non-conference affair while Mustang net minder Kelsey Parkin (Standish, Me.) recorded the shutout while making just four saves.
Drew Johndrow (Killingly, Conn.) played the first 45 minutes in net for the Mariners while recording four saves. Freshman keeper Jordan Lohneiss (West Hartford, Conn.) took over for the final half of the game making seven saves of her own.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Saturday, September 10th when they play host to their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match up of the season when they welcome the University of Saint Joseph (CT) to Alumni Field for a 2:30 PM kickoff. Mitchell will next play at Lyndon State College on Saturday as well with game time slated for noon time.
