Mustangs Tamed by Wildcats, Drop GNAC Tilt, 4-0

NEWTON, Mass. -- The Mount Ida College women's soccer team fell to the visiting Wildcats of Johnson and Wales University on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 4-0.

With the setback, Mount Ida drops to 2-3-4 (0-2-1 GNAC) while Johnson and Wales improves to 4-5 (2-1  GNAC).

After a scoreless back and forth battle through the first fifteen minutes of regulation, sophomore Kyra Selner (Sterling, Va.) found freshman Mallory Buys (Harwinton, Conn.) who broke through in the 17th minute when Buys took her run all the way to the end line before cutting back toward the middle of the box while slotting the ball past Mount Ida netminder Kelsey Parkin (Standish, Me.) for the 1-0 lead.

Both teams went back and forth for the remainder of the half with little scoring opportunities for either side while JWU held onto the lead going into the half at 1-0.

The Wildcats came out of half pressuring the Mustang defense before Taylor Hopkins (Warminster, Pa.) scored her third goal of the season to put the visitors ahead 2-0. Just three minutes later Selner notched her first marker of the afternoon after her shot ricocheted off the hands of Parkin giving JWU the early 3-0 lead in the second half.

Elizabeth Marinaro (Palo Alto, Calif.) scored the 4th and final goal of the contest for the Wildcats off the foot of Kali Trunca (Litchfield, N.H.) in the 60th minute giving JWU the 4-0 GNAC victory.

JWU outshot Mount Ida 27-5 and held the slight edge in corners, 2-0. Parkin dropped to 1-2-3 on the season while Alex Place (East Greenwich, R.I.) improved to 3-4 on the season.

Mount Ida will be back in action next Wednesday night when they travel to Simmons College with game time set for 7:00 PM. Johnson and Wales will next take the field on Wednesday, September 30th as well when they host GNAC foe Rivier.
