PAXTON, Mass.—The 2015 Mount Ida College women's soccer team knows how it feels to score late in a game to tie the score. On Wednesday evening, they felt the pain of being on the other end of that kind of a finish, as hosts Anna Maria College tallied in the 89th minute and the two teams eventually played to a 2-2 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.
Just two games after Mount Ida levelled themselves with a goal with eleven seconds to play, the Amcats came from behind for the second time when sophomore Ashley Bottis (Rutland, Mass.) scored her second goal of the game to knot the score at 2-2 and force overtime, where the teams played twenty more scoreless minutes.
With today's result, the fourth consecutive draw for the Mustangs, they now sit at 1-1-4 overall and 0-0-2 in GNAC play. Anna Maria sees its record set at 2-2-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the conference.
The Mustangs scored the lone goal of the first half through freshman Lacey Perry (Westport, Mass.), who scored that pivotal late goal in Mount Ida's draw against Mitchell, and she now has two collegiate tallies.
Mount Ida held control for a majority of the game, holding a 21-9 advantage in shots over the full 110 minutes, but Bottis, who now has seven markers on the year, tied the match with a penalty kick in the 57th minute.
Two-and-a-half minutes later, sophomore Alee Bonola (Windsor, Conn.) found herself in a one-on-one scenario with AMCAT netminder Kate Kneeland (Windham, Maine), and pushed a low shot past Kneeland's dive for her second goal of the year.
Bottis's game-tying goal in the 89th minute was a breakaway—the forward collected the ball off of a Mustang defender 40-yards out and carried it about 25-yards, where she pushed a shot past Mustang goalkeeper Kelsey Parkin (Standish, Maine).
Kneeland tallied nine saves in net for the AMCATS, while Parkin tallied four saves for Mount Ida.
Neither team scored in the extra 20 minutes, but the Mustangs held a 5-0 advantage in shots.
Mount Ida dips out of GNAC play for their final time with their next two games, an 11:00 AM tilt this Saturday at Becker and a home game against Wheelock on September 24th.
Anna Maria hits the road for a stretch, making stops Regis on Saturday at 1:30 and Newbury on Monday at 8:00 p.m.
