NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Mount Ida College women's soccer team battled host Norwich University to a 2-2 draw on Saturday night in each team's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.
Mount Ida (1-1-3, 0-0-1 GNAC) scored just 35 seconds in when Isabelle Moody (Naugatuck, Conn.) scored her first of two goals on the night. Moody ripped a shot with her left foot into the right corner of the net from 30 yards out.
Norwich (1-2-1, 0-0-1 GNAC) responded in the 58th minute with freshman Danielle Johnson (Groton, Mass) scoring her first collegiate goal with a hard strike from the top of the penalty area into the top right corner of the net off an assist from junior Mehgan McMullen (Northfield, Vt.).
The Cadets took a brief 2-1 lead with 8:03 left in the second half when Tiana Cass (Torrington, Conn.) slipped home her first goal of the season into an open net after Jordan Kacur (Red Creek, N.Y.). Kacur flipped the ball forward after a collision with the Mount Ida goalkeeper.
However, the lead was short-lived as Moody answered back left than a minute later with a long free kick from 35 yards out that tucked just underneath the cross bar to knot the game back up at 2-2, helping the Mustangs secure their third consecutive draw.
Cass had the best chance of the overtime, making a long run up the field and evading two defenders before just pushing a shot inches wide of the left post.
NU sophomore goalkeeper Leandra Flores-Nieves (Colorado Springs, Colo.) made 12 saves for the Cadets, while Mount Ida graduate goalkeeper Nickole Soto (Marlboro, Mass.) made seven stops for the Mustangs.
Mount Ida outshot Norwich 23-17.
The Mustangs travel to Anna Maria next Wednesday at 7:00 pm for another GNAC affair.
Norwich returns to action on Wednesday night as well when it hosts Plymouth State at 7 p.m. in non-conference action.
