NEWTON, Mass. – Seniors Sierra Legge (Schodack Landing, N.Y.), Kaitlyn Affhauser (Cheshire, Mass.), and Nickole Soto (Marlboro, Mass.) were honored prior to today's game against the visiting Sharks of Simmons College. Affhauser recorded her third career goal in the in the 49th minute to even things up after Victoria Russo (Braintree, Mass.) gave the visitors the early 1-0 advantage.
Russo put the Sharks ahead for good in the 33rd minute of the first half when she was able to get a foot on a ball that knocked off Mustang keeper Mia Desroches (Enfield, Conn.) which then hit the post and rolled in the back of the net. Simmons would hold the slight 1-0 edge after the first half of play while outshooting the Mustangs 7-0.
Affhauser notched the game at 1-1 just four minutes into the half when her touch found the back of the net off of Legge's corner kick. Ali Berkman (Natick, Mass.) put the Sharks ahead for good when teammate Erin Montambault (Watertown, Mass.) found Berkman at the top of the box who rifled a low driven shot that ricocheted off a Mustang defender beating Desroches and giving Simmons the 2-1 advantage.
The Mustangs saw a few other opportunities in the second half but were unable to capitalize. Freshman Alee Bonola (Windsor, Conn.) saw a chance midway through the second half when she found herself back post but saw her shot sail inches over the cross bar. Bonola led the Mustangs with three shots, while Legge notched two on the day with Affhauser's lone shot being the lone goal of the afternoon.
Kashka Gammon (Nashua, N.H.) tallied the third and final goal of the game for the Sharks off a rebound in front of the Mustang net in the 71st minute of play.
Simmons outshot the Mustangs 24-6 on the afternoon while also holing a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Mount Ida's season comes to a close while Simmons will move on to finish off the regular season on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to play the Pride of Springfield College before they compete in the quarterfinal round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tournament which will begin next Sunday.
