Mustangs Drop GNAC Tilt to Falcons, 3-0

NEWTON, Mass. – The Mount Ida College women's soccer team fell to the Falcons of Albertus Magnus on Monday afternoon by a final score of 3-0. With the setback, Mount Ida drops to (3-10-1, 2-5-1 GNAC) while Albertus improves to (7-7-1, 4-3-1 GNAC).

Throughout the opening twenty-five minutes of the first half, both teams were exchanged opportunities to put their squad ahead but neither were able to find the back of the net.

It wasn't until the 26th minute when junior Maegan Hernberg (Eastford, Conn.) cleared a ball inside of her own six that redirected off Falcon freshman Taylor Rotella (Milford, Conn.) beating Mustang keeper Nickole Soto (Marlboro, Mass.) and giving Albertus Magnus the 1-0 cushion. With just under 9:00 minutes remaining in the half, junior Acacia Nelson (Bridgeport, Conn.) found a ball at her feet from teammate Danielle Polvan (East Haven, Conn.) who beat Soto back post off her first touch to give the visitors the 2-0 advantage.

Just over a minute later, Albertus earned a restart from the corner kick spot where Kaitlyn Fedumenti (Stratford, Conn.) was on the ball. Fedumenti put a ball to the back post where she found the head of Taylor Jagoe (Milford, Conn.) who buried home the free kick for the 3-0 lead heading into the break.

Mount Ida opened the second half controlling the pace of the game as well as possession. Senior Sierra Legge (Schodack Landing, N.Y.) who played a strong game for the green and white was able to thread several through balls behind the Albertus back four but the Mustangs weren't able to capitalize on any of the opportunities, while mustering only five shots on the afternoon. The Falcons saw a couple opportunities in the second half sail high after two strikes from outside the box pinned the cross bar, one going out of bounds off the ricochet and one falling into the hands of Soto.

Albertus managed 20 shots on the afternoon while seeing ten of them on target. The Falcons held the advantage in corner kicks as well earning five of them in the game.

Mount Ida will return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) on Saturday afternoon when they travel to cross-town rival Lasell College for a doubleheader with game time slated for 2:30 p.m. Albertus Magnus will travel to Paxton, Massachusetts on Friday evening when they take on the AMCATS of Anna Maria with kickoff  set for 3:00.
