NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida scored in the 80th minute to get back within a goal, but they ran out of time while trying to find an equalizer and fell 2-1 to the University of Saint Joseph in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Junior Isabelle Moody (Naugatuck, Conn.) headed home a Sierra Legge (Schodack Landing, N.Y.) corner kick after a pair of goals by the Blue Jays in the first half had given the visitors the lead.
For Moody, it was her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Dayna Gambino (Newington, Conn.) opened the scoring for Saint Joseph (7-5-1, 4-2-1 GNAC) in the third minute with her fourth goal of the year, as her shot deflected past Mount Ida senior goalkeeper Nickole Soto (Marlboro, Mass.), who made three saves in rainy and cold conditions.
Melissa Dodge (Watertown, Conn.) made three saves as well in the opposite goal.
The visitors doubled their advantage with twenty minutes gone when Emily Burke (Windsor Locks, Conn.) found sophomore Jaclyn Steeves (Everett, Mass.) with a pass that put her 1v1 against Soto, and she tallied her first goal of the year.
The Mustangs, who matched their opponents with eleven shots and three corner kicks, nearly scored inside of the opening minute when Alex Lincoln (Stamford, Vt.) and Hannah Brackett (Voorheesville, N.Y.) each had chances to get on the end of a cross by Moody, but Dodge reached high to stop the first attempt and then had good reflexes to deflect Brackett's follow-up effort.
The Mustangs are home again on Monday afternoon when they host GNAC rival Albertus Magnus at 2:00 pm.
Saint Joseph is in conference action on the holiday as well, travelling to Anna Maria for a 12:00 pm start.
