GNAC Result Slips Away from Mustangs In Overtime At Rivier

NASHUA, N.H. -- The Mount Ida women's soccer team battled into double overtime on Wednesday evening on the road at Rivier University, but after tying the game in the second half, they conceded in the second overtime to drop a 2-1 decision to the Raiders in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

The result dips Mount Ida to 2-3-1 in the conference (3-8-1 overall), while Rivier earns their first GNAC victory of the year, improving to 1-5 (6-6 overall).

In the second overtime, Rivier junior Paxton LaRocque (Londonderry, N.H.) was able to gather a pass from sophomore Meghan Caron (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and dribble it inside the 18 before lifting the game winning shot over the outstretched Mount Ida goalie Mia Desroches (Enfield, Conn.) to end the game with 4:48 remaining.

Trailing by a goal, Mount Ida found the equalizer in the 58th minute as sophomore Hannah Brackett (Vooreesville, N.Y.) collected a loose rebound from an Isabelle Moody (Naugatuck, Conn.) shot and ripped a shot to knot the game at one apiece after the hosts had taken the lead in the 9th minute.

Moody, who had scored in five straight games heading into this contest, was still a spark on the Mount Ida attack, as she fired 14 shots, 7 of which were on net.

Rivier had a lot of chances early as sophomore Maggie Cohoon (Derry, N.H.) and junior LaRocque were able to take quality shots inside the 18 yard box. Cohoon would convert her second breakaway opportunity in the 9th minute as she raced down the left side and placed in the back of the net for her team leading 13th goal.

The teams battled back-and-forth while exchanging goal scoring opportunities but when the halftime horn sounded, it was still 1-0 in favor of the home squad.

Rivier had several chances late in the second half to take the lead, but Desroches, playing her first game in net at the collegiate level, was able to make some terrific saves to send the game into extra time. She ended the game with 8 stops, while Rivier freshman goalkeeper Lauren Goodspeed (Merrimack, N.H.) made 13 saves on the evening.

Both teams will be back in GNAC action on Saturday afternoon. Mount Ida will host University of Saint Joseph at noon as part of a doubleheader at Alumni Field.

Rivier will welcome the Suffolk University Rams to Raider Field for a 1pm kickoff.
