Mustang’s Win Streak Pushed to Three in Conference Shutout

NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida women's soccer team extended their winning streak to three games and picked up their second Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win of the season with a 4-0 shutout victory over Norwich University on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Mustangs (3-6, 2-1 GNAC) beat Norwich for the second straight season after the Cadets (2-5, 0-3 GNAC) had won the first six meetings between the programs.

Just like last year in Northfield, Sierra Legge scored the game-winning goal for Mount Ida. This time, however, it came in the opening 12:30 minutes of play, as opposed to her overtime strike in 2013.

Legge rifled a bouncing ball from 25 yards out for her first goal of the season and the home team never looked back, getting a pair of saves from senior Nickole Soto (Marlboro, Mass.), who earned her second shutout of the year.

Soto and the Mustangs have now allowed just one goal in over 270 minutes over their last three games.

Sophomore Hannah Brackett (Voorheesville, N.Y.) also scored in the first half and junior Isabelle Moody (Naugatuck, Conn.) added a pair of goals after the break to ensure the Mount Ida victory.

Brackett blasted a shot over the head of Norwich goalie Molly Miller (Raymond, Maine) in the 26th minute, with the pass coming from freshman Alee Bonola (Windsor, Conn.).

Moody's goals were both unassisted. She steamed down the right side and finished top corner in the 59th minute, then dribbled through the defense and beat Miller, who had six saves in the game, fifteen minutes later.

Mount Ida outshot the Cadets 23-9, while Norwich enjoyed a 5-2 corner kick advantage. Clara Leister (Hartland, Vt.) and Mehgan McMullen (Northfield, Vt.) were the two Norwich field players to force saves out of Soto.

Mount Ida continues their home slate of GNAC games when they host Emmanuel on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm at Alumni Field.

Norwich will look to bounce back at the very same time when they host Saint Joseph (Conn.) in Northfield.
