NEWTON, Mass. – Visiting Emerson College used a flurry of goals in the first half to score a 9-0 victory over Mount Ida in non-conference women's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Mount Ida (0-4) will now turn their attention to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play, which begins on Saturday at noon when they travel to Saint Joseph's Maine.
Junior Alyssa Giannone (Mountainside, N.J.) scored two goals and added two assists for Emerson, while Gabi Galvin (Arlington, Mass.) and Mollie Coyne (Hamilton, N.J.) each scored a brace of goals as well.
The Lions (1-3) outshot their opponents 23-12, though Mount Ida had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Mount Ida sophomore Chloe Segal (Needham, Mass.) nearly opened the scoring in the 9th minute, firing a shot from point blank range off of a corner kick that was snagged by Emerson sophomore Melanie Escobar (Torrington, Conn.).
Four minutes later, Coyne and Giannone hocked up for the first time of the day on a shot from the left side, which Coyne finished into the top corner.
Four and a half minutes later, Anne Carroll (Lincoln, R.I.) doubled the Lion's advantage on a through ball from junior Tayllar Righini (Salem, N.H.), who registered a pair of assists in the game.
Coyne turned provider for Giannone at 28:14, which started a three-goal in three minute spurt for Emerson. Giannone scored two of those goals and assisted on the third, the second of the game by Coyne. Carroll had a pair of assists in the first half to go with her goal.
Sophomore Vanessa Baird (Lake George, N.Y.) gave Emerson a six-goal lead with eight minutes until halftime on a pass from Alexandra Levin (Glen Ellyn, Ill.).
Levin scored on the other side of the break before Galvin scored in the 60th and 69th minute to cap the scoring.
The Mustangs had several chances in the second half, outshooting Emerson 5-2, and nearly got on the scoreboard in the 83rd minute when Hannah Brackett (Voorheesville, N.Y.) hit the post on a shot curled in from the left.
Mount Ida sophomore Rebecca Beaulieu (Weare, N.H.) made eight saves in the loss, while Escobar stopped three shots to earn the victory and the shutout in her first action of the 2014 season.
The Lions finish out their first five game slate which sees them play four games at home on Saturday when they host Maine Farmington at 1:00 pm.
