Mustangs Fall to Lynx on Opening Night

Cambridge, Mass.-- The Mount Ida College women's soccer team kicked off the 2014 campaign with a 8-0 setback to the Lynx of Lesley University. With the loss, Mount Ida drops to 0-1 while Lesley starts strong at 1-0.

The hosts jumped ahead early as the senior Hannah Landerholm (Edmonds, Calif.) buried a penalty kick in the 14th minute following a Mt. Ida hand ball inside the 18-yard box. The Lynx doubled their advantage just nine minutes later when senior Jasmine Sanchez (Chino, Calif.) took a touch at the top of the box before drilling a right-footed shot into the lower left corner past the diving Beaulieu.

Vidana got her offense going in the 29th minute when she snuck one past Beaulieu for her first tally of the night, giving the Lynx a 3-0 edge that they would carry into half time.

Mt. Ida's best opportunity came in the 18th minute of play as senior Sierra Legge (Schodack Landing, N.Y.) sent a right-footed blast from 25-yards out, but Berard was there to corral the shot and keep the visitors scoreless.

The Lesley offense did not slow in the second half as they added five more goals in the final 45-minutes, three of which came over a span of three minutes. Sophomore Cassidy Hopkins (Porter, Tx.) started the onslaught when she finished a feed from senior Christina Ogunti (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) in the 69th minute. Vidana headed home her second off the night on a corner kick off the foot of sophomore Lindsey Bos (Valencia, Calif.) before senior Marysol Flores (Pico Rivera, Calif.) added her first tally of the season just thirty seconds later.

Sophomore Julie Essick (Beorne, Texas.) added a goal in her Lesley debut after forcing a turnover in the Mustang defensive end before Vidana finished off her three-goal effort in the 83rd minute.

Lesley held the balance of play in their offensive zone, out-shooting Mt. Ida by a 21-2 margin. The Lynx also held the advantage in corner kicks by a 14-2 margin.

The Lynx will continue their three-game home stand and be back in action on Tuesday, September 2nd as they host Eastern Nazarene College under the lights at 8:00p in non-conference action. The Mustangs will return to the pitch on Thursday, September 4th as they travel to Curry College for a 7:00p kickoff.
