Wednesday, October 3, 2012 (Newton, Massachusetts) - The Mount Ida College women's soccer team dropped their fifth consecutive loss falling 4-2 to visiting Norwich University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Wednesday evening on Alumni Field in Newton, Massachusetts.
The Mustangs surrendered the opening two scores of the game before cutting the lead to 2-1 right before the midway point. But two quick goals early in second half by the visitors put any chance of a comeback to bed eventually serving Mount Ida the loss. The hosts had plenty of chances to keep pace offensively with the visitors but failed to convert.
Mount Ida falls to an overall record of 3-7-0 with a league slate of 1-6 while the Cadets improve to 4-5-2, 2-3-2 in GNAC play.
Two straight unassisted goals by Norwich senior forward Brittany Casey (Point-Claire, QC/Kent School) propelled the visitors to a 2-0 opening lead through the first 21 minutes of play. The first Casey score came in the third minute on a shot from beyond the 18 yard box that landed behind Mount Ida goaltender, freshman Samantha Basler (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth North), for the immediate 1-0 advantage.
Casey added another in the 21st minute that found the bottom right hand corner of the net on a well-placed shot giving the Cadets the 2-0 lead with no answer from the hosts.
The Mustangs pulled themselves together through the next 15 minutes of play and cut the visiting advantage down to a goal on an impressive play by freshman defender Isabelle Moody (Naugatuck, CT/Naugatuck). Moody hammered a shot from about 40 yards away that blew past Cadet junior net minder Allison Hull (South Royalton, VT/Latin Academy) making it 2-1 Norwich heading into halftime.
After the break, it did not take long for the visitors to pile on two more scores, separated by only two minutes (54th, 57th), both converted by Cadet senior forward Courtney Parisot (Watertown, CT/Kent School). Casey aided in the first goal on a through ball that Parisot would deposit into the right corner to lead 3-1. Parisot added another on an unassisted bid into the bottom right of the net two minutes later for the commanding 4-1 advantage.
The bright spot for the hosts was Mount Ida freshman midfielder Jenna Perkins (Nottingham, NH/Coe Brown Northwood) tallying her first goal of the season on a corner kick that ricocheted off the net. Perkins redirected a shot into the right corner off the rebound for her first score of the season.
It would be too late for any type of comeback for the hosts sending Norwich back to Northfield with a 4-2 league win.
Basler saw all 90 minutes between the pipes for the Mustangs stopping 10 visitor attempts out of 24 shots taken by the Cadets. Hull played the entire contest as well making seven saves for Norwich.
Mount Ida women's soccer will travel to league foe Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts Saturday afternoon with game time slated for 2:00 p.m. while the visitors will host GNAC member St. Joseph's College (ME) that same day starting at 1:00 p.m.
