Wednesday, September 14, 2011(Newton, Massachusetts) - The Mount Ida College women's soccer team surrendered 37 total shots to visiting Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Johnson & Wales University eventually falling 4-0 dropping their second consecutive league bid Wednesday afternoon on a hot day in Newton, Massachusetts.
The Mustangs drop to 1-3 overall for 2011 and are winless in conference play (0-2). The visitors improve to 2-3 on the year and remain undefeated in the league (2-0).
It took 21 minutes for the visitors put their first goal in the net. Wildcat freshman Kayla Sypek (Westhampton, MA/Hampshire Regional), who netted a hat trick for the contest, collected a pass from senior Katlyn Gerrish (North Stonington, CT/Wheeler) and deposited a shot into the net for the 1-0 lead.
Sypek recorded her second score in the 43rd minute of play on a through ball from freshman Mackenzie Forbeck (Sussex, NJ/High Point Regional). Sypek broke away from the last Mustang defender and slid a shot into the right corner for the 2-0 advantage.
15 minutes into the second half the Wildcats struck again on a goal from Gerrish off a feed from Berkeley Cecchini-Bond (Uncasville, CT/Montville) in the six yard box. Gerrish poked in a shot behind the Mount Ida goaltender for a commanding 3-0 lead in the 60th minute.
Sypek completed the hat trick on a 50/50 ball inside the box. Two players took a swing at the ball with the shot being redirected towards the net that ultimately bounced into the left corner for the unassisted score and the 4-0 victory.
Mount Ida was only able to muster two shots the entire contest while the ball remained mostly on the offensive side for Johnson & Wales.
Mustang senior Tracy Koukol (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro), who usually is a defender; saw the entire contest between the pipes notching 13 saves. Wildcat goaltender sophomore Kara Collins (North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) didn't have much action denying one Mount Ida shot.
The Mustangs will travel to GNAC foe Emmanuel College this coming Saturday with game time slated for 1:00 p.m.
