Thursday, September 30, 2010 (Newton, Massachusetts) - The Mount Ida College women's soccer team snapped a six game losing streak with a 3-0 victory over visiting non-conference Becker College Thursday afternoon in Newton, Massachusetts on a windy and overcast day. The Mustangs snatch their second win of the season with an overall record of 2-6-1 remaining 0-6-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play while the Hawks fall to a 3-6 record in 2010.
Mount Ida dominated offensively with a total of 20 shots for the game while the visitors could only muster six overall. The Mustangs got on the board quickly in the 15th minute of play on an unassisted score by senior Becky Tisbert (Cambridge, VT/Lamoille Union). Tisbert caught a defection on the right side of the box and chipped a shot over the goaltenders head that grazed the crossbar, going straight down behind the line, for the 1-0 advantage.
The hosts struck again in the 25th minute of play on senior Michelle Alessi's (Salem, MA/Bishop Fenwick) second goal of the season from sophomore forward Heather Harrington (Bedford, NH/Manchester West). Harrington flicked a head ball from inside the box to an open Alessi who placed a perfect shot into the right side of the net for the 2-0 lead. This would close out the scoring in the first half heading into the break with the Mustangs commanding the game.
The final goal came on Tisbert's second score of the contest on a breakaway that she fired into the right corner of the net in the 47th minute for the 3-0 advantage that ultimately became a non-conference win.
Mount Ida goaltender, senior Meghan Begins (Jericho, VT/Jericho), didn't see much action denying two visiting attempts. Hawks netminder freshman Christina Boucher (Pawcatuck, CT/Stonington) saw the first half with six saves while senior Alena Phongsa (Putnam, CT/Putnam) played the second with no saves.
The Mustangs will travel to visiting GNAC foe Suffolk University this Saturday starting at 2:00 p.m.
