In the 86th minute of the season home opener, with the score tied 1-1, Mount Ida College women's soccer freshman Devan Meeker (Bantam, CT/Litchfield) poked in a loose ball in front of the net to give the Mustangs a 2-1 victory over visiting Anna Maria College in non-conference action this Wednesday afternoon in Newton, Massachusetts. Mount Ida improves to 1-0 overall while the AmCats (0-1) go home dropping their season opener.
The Mustangs jumped ahead in the opening five minutes of the contest on an unassisted freshman Heather Harrington (Bedford, NH/Manchester West) score taking the 1-0 lead. The action was very quiet for the remainder of the first half with no real opportunity for another goal by either side. They headed into the locker room with the hosts up 1-0.
Neither team could put anything together for the bulk of the second half with both squads looking pretty flat. The Mustangs could not convert giving the opposition a wide open chance to capitalize. The AmCats eventually knotted the score in the 76th minute on a Alicia Savo (Mount Vernon, NH/Souhegan) score fed from sophomore Moira Twigg (Middleboro, MA/Middleboro) making it 1-1.
Mount Ida would not give up re-energizing taking the 2-1 lead in the 86th minute on Meeker's goal off a cross that created the scoring chance by freshman Jamie Labrie (Southampton, MA/Hampshire Regional). The final horn sounded with the Mustangs capturing their first victory of the season. The hosts outshot the visitors 18-4 for the contest with only one yellow card issued to an Anna Maria player.
Junior goaltender Meghan Begins (Jericho, VT/Jericho) did not see much action between the pipes for Mount Ida denying three out of the four shots the AmCats took. Freshman Tabitha Ruggeri (Sturbridge, MA/Tantasqua) made 11 saves for the visitors.
The Mustangs will travel to non-conference Lesley University this coming Saturday starting at 12:00 p.m.
