The Mount Ida College women's soccer team notched their fourth victory of the season capturing a 2-0 win over visiting Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) member Pine Manor College Tuesday afternoon in Newton, Massachusetts. The Mustangs improve to 4-8-3, 2-7-2 in conference play while the Gators remain winless in the GNAC (0-9) and fall to 1-16-0 for the year.
Mount Ida's first goal of the contest came in the 16th minute of play on a bounding ball in the box that had been pin-balled around the six yard line. Freshman midfield Elena Ooms (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) recorded her first score of the season on an unassisted score tucking her shot into the right side for the 1-0 advantage.
Although Mount Ida hammered the net throughout the first stanza, they could not manage to score again nor did the Gators have a legit opportunity of their own before the break. The score remained at 1-0 heading into halftime.
After a slow start to the second half, the Mustangs notched their final goal of the contest on another unassisted score by senior Katie Lorenco (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester) giving Mount Ida the 2-0 advantage. The goal, which came on another clean up in front of the net, was collected off a deflection and slid by the dive of Gators goalkeeper freshman Margaret Roberts (Allentown, PA/Louis E. Dieruff). The Mustangs rode out the 2-0 victory for their second GNAC win of the season.
Mount Ida junior goalkeeper Meghan Begins (Jericho, VT/Jericho) didn't see much action denying only four shots while Roberts stopped 11 for the Gators. The Mustangs dominated their offensive half of the field outshooting Pine Manor 24-9.
The Mustangs will host neighboring rival Lasell College on senior day this Saturday for more GNAC action starting at 1:00 p.m. for their final game of the season.
