MUSTANGS DRAW 0-0 DOUBLE OT TIE AGAINST WILDCATS

The Mount Ida College women's soccer team knotted a 0-0 double overtime draw with visiting Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Johnson & Wales University on a cold Monday afternoon in Newton, Massachusetts.  The Mustangs hold at 3-8-3, 1-7-1 in conference play while the Wildcats stay at 7-5-2, 4-3-2 in the GNAC.

Mount Ida controlled the entire first half with numerous opportunities to score.  Junior captain Lindsay Lincoln (Clarksburg, MA/Drury) hammered a shot from the top of the 18 yard box that caromed off the cross bar for a missed chance in the 13th minute of play.

Five minutes later, freshman Heather Harrington (Bedford, NH/Manchester West) blasted a close range shot that kissed off the left post and out of bounds.  The squads headed into the break knotted at a 0-0 tie with all the momentum in favor of the Mustangs.

The second half was stalemated with neither squad with any legitimate chance for a score to take over the lead.  Mount Ida goalkeeper Meghan Begins (Jericho, VT/Jericho) made a couple of point blank stops to keep her team alive heading into extra time.

After a quiet first overtime, the Mustangs had one final chance to take the lead.  Senior Katie Lorenco (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester) crushed a shot in the 107th minute of play that was denied by Wildcat goalkeeper sophomore Samantha Reynolds (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth North).  The game ended there after the ball was cleared out of the zone for the 0-0 double overtime draw.

Begins had an outstanding individual effort for the Mustangs between the pipes stopping six JWU shots while Wildcat goaltender Reynolds saved seven.

The Mustangs will do it all over again tomorrow for more GNAC action against visiting Pine Manor College starting at 3:30 p.m.
