FINAL: MOUNT IDA 10, SIMMONS 7
NEWTON, Mass. -- Junior Brooke Scahill (Gales Ferry, Conn.) netted four goals and an assist to back a 17-save effort in goal from senior Eleanor Garvey (Elkridge, Md.) as Mount Ida extended its winning streak to a school-record eight straight with a 10-7 Great Northeast Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse victory over Simmons Tuesday evening at Alumni Field.
The host Mustangs (9-1, 5-0 GNAC), who are off to the best start in the program’s nine-year history, overcame a 3-1 deficit by scoring three times in the final 8:16 of the opening half to take a 4-3 edge at the break on junior Alyssa Kelly’s (Lee, Mass.) marker. The two teams traded tallies in the first 7:10 after intermission before the visiting Sharks (6-4, 2-3 GNAC) forged a 5-5 tie with just under 20 minutes to play on junior Mallory Cottam’s (Hope, R.I.) goal, but freshman Jordyn Ringuette (Colchester, Conn.) gave Mount Ida the lead for good on her second score of the contest with 14:44 remaining in the match. Goals by Kelly and Scahill that came 75 seconds apart extended the hosts’ advantage to 8-5, but Simmons cut its deficit to two on senior Kasey Fries’ (Bridgewater, Mass.) marker with 6:49 to play. The Mustangs iced their triumph with goals from Scahill and senior Emily McConnell (Dracut, Mass.), as Mount Ida has outscored its opponents by 84 goals (142-58) during the winning streak that began on St. Patrick’s Day.
Kelly netted a hat trick and an assist to finish with four points in the win for the Mustangs, as she is now tied with former Mount Ida standout Amanda Bowen for the school career points mark with 268 apiece. Ringuette added an assist to go with her two tallies on the night for the hosts, who received a marker and helper from McConnell as well as a single assist off the stick of senior Hayley Napier (Fairhaven, Mass.). Kelly and Scahill (this week’s GNAC Player of the Week) entered the contest ranked in the top five nationally in NCAA Division III in points per game, as the duo have combined for 99 goals and 57 assists for 156 points to date.
Fries finished with four goals in the setback for Simmons, as she closed to within two points of tying the Sharks’ career points record of 195. Sophomore Amina Mansouri (Revere, Mass.) accounted for the other two tallies of the evening for the visitors, who saw their two-match winning streak come to an end.
Garvey earned her ninth win of the season by making 10 of her 17 stops in the second half alone for Mount Ida, while freshman Cat Cross (Beverly, Mass.) made eight saves in the setback for Simmons as the Sharks outshot the Mustangs by a 32-23 margin overall (24-18 on goal), but the hosts held an 11-8 edge in draw controls for the contest.
Mount Ida will be idle until next Tuesday, April 10th when the Mustangs travel to New Britain, Conn. to take on Saint Joseph (Conn.) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference clash on the campus of Central Connecticut State beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Simmons heads to Auburndale, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to square off with Lasell in a GNAC outing that begins at Noon.
