FINAL: NORWICH 14, MOUNT IDA 11
NEWTON, Mass. -- Freshman Emily Schromm (North Attleboro, Mass.) netted seven goals to lead Norwich to a 14-11 Great Northeast Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse victory over Mount Ida Tuesday evening at Alumni Field.
The two teams traded three scores each before the visiting Cadets (6-5, 4-3 GNAC) received goals from freshman Kathryn Preul (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and senior Meaghan McGrath (Barre, Vt.) in a 43 second span to take a 5-3 lead with 11:01 remaining in the first half, but junior Brooke Scahill (Gales Ferry, Conn.) evened matters for the host Mustangs (10-3, 6-2 GNAC) at 5-5 with a pair of tallies that came in a span of 46 seconds. Goals by Schromm and sophomore Olivia Bloom (Annapolis, Md.) in the final 7:35 of play staked Norwich to a 7-5 advantage at the break, and Schromm’s man-up marker with 19:34 remaining in the match increased that margin to 8-5.
Senior Emily McConnell (Dracut, Mass.) sparked a run for Mount Ida by netting three goals in a 3:39 span, including her third of the night that forged a 9-9 tie with 8:03 to play, and after Bloom’s free position conversion gave the Cadets the edge once again, Scahill’s free position tally just 33 seconds later knotted matters for the final time at 10-10. The visitors used a decisive three goal over a 1:44 stretch to take the lead for good, as tallies from Bloom and Schromm sandwiched sophomore Jordan Lutz’s (Hamburg, N.J.) man-up marker to ice the Cadets’ triumph.
Bloom finished with a hat trick in the win for Norwich, which received a pair of goals and an assist from McGrath along with a helper from sophomore Mary-Kait Mace (Canton, N.Y.). Scahill finished with four goals and a pair of assists for six points in the setback for Mount Ida, while junior Alyssa Kelly (Lee, Mass.) collected a hat trick to become the second Mustang to reach the 200 career goal plateau, as she added three helpers to complete a six-point performance. Freshman Jordyn Ringuette (Colchester, Conn.) tallied as well for the hosts, as the two teams combined for 12 free positon goals on the evening.
Sophomore Janice Bolton (Stow, Mass.) picked up her third win of the season with a 14-save effort in goal for Norwich, while senior Eleanor Garvey (Elkridge, Md.) made nine stops in the setback for Mount Ida as the Mustangs held a 31-27 overall advantage in shots (25-23 on goal), but the Cadets held a 14-13 edge in draw controls for the contest.
Mount Ida heads to Providence, R.I. on Saturday afternoon to take on Johnson & Wales in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference clash beginning at 1:00 p.m., while Norwich hosts Lasell in a GNAC outing on Thursday afternoon in Northfield, Vt. that begins at 4:00 p.m.
