Monks Ride Past Mustangs in Snowy Maine

PORTLAND, Maine – Mount Ida College (3-12, 2-6 GNAC) fell to the Monks of Saint Joseph's College (14-2, 8-0 GNAC) by a final score of 18-3 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Tuesday evening at Deering Memorial Stadium in Portland, Me.

THE LEAD

Saint Joseph's scored seven goals in the first 10 minutes and held a 15-0 advantage heading into intermission as junior Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Me.) and sophomore Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Me.) tallied four goals apiece in the opening stanza. Playing with running time, the conference counterparts both scored three goals in the second half to account for the 18-3 final.

SJC HIGHLIGHTS

  • Caiazzo paced the Monks with five goals and added a pair of draw controls
  • Senior Mary Leasure (South Portland, Me.) tallied two goals and four assists
  • Senior Kat Gadbois (Scarborough, Me.) contributed two goals, three assists, three ground balls, three caused turnovers, and two draw controls
  • Senior Elizabeth Elcock (Westwood, Mass.) chipped in with two goals and an assist with two ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers
  • Freshman Kayla Kelly (York, Me.) scored twice in the triumph
  • Junior Jackie Wilson (Tiverton, R.I.) added a goal, eight draw controls, and two ground balls
  • Senior Meghan Williams (Greenland, N.H.) picked up a game-high five ground balls

IDA HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sophomore Hayley Napier (Fairhaven, Mass.), senior Samantha Basler (Plymouth, Mass.), and junior Nikki Kinneen (Salem, N.H.) found the back of the net for the Mustangs. All three goals were scored in the last last 4:09 of the game
  • Freshman Alyssa Kelly (Lee, Mass.) added an assist with three ground balls and two draw controls

THE KEEPERS

  • Saint Joseph's senior Michelle Cunha (Enfield, Conn.) made three saves to pick up her 12th victory of the season
  • Mount Ida freshman netminder Jackie Tarsook (Derry, N.H.) faced 28 shots and made 10 stops in the loss

TEAM STATS

Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (34-8), ground balls (22-12), draw controls (14-6), and caused turnovers (10-5) in the triumph and successfully cleared on nine of 10 attempts on the evening. Mount Ida was 9-15 on clear attempts and scored a pair of goals on four free-position shots. The Monks were 4-5 on free-position bids.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 6-1 in the history of the series with Mount Ida College, a team the Monks defeated by an 18-7 margin in Newton last spring.

Both teams close out regular season play with GNAC contests this Saturday, when Saint Joseph's hosts Norwich University at Westerlea Way Field in a 1:00 PM start and Mount Ida travels to Albertus Magnus College for a 5:00 PM tilt.
