NEWTON, Mass. – Senior Amanda Bowen (Randolph, Vt.) scored her 148th career goal on Wednesday afternoon, making her the all-time leading goal scorer in Mount Ida women's lacrosse history and helping the Mustangs to a 22-2 rout of Albertus Magnus College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Alumni Field.
Bowen, who scored three goals in the contest to put her at 149 for her career, broke the record at 17:53 left in the first half on a strike that, at the time, gave the Mustangs a 7-0 lead. That sent her past Jen Thompson, who scored 147 goals in just two seasons from 2010-11.
Mount Ida had already jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a natural hat trick by sophomore Rebecca Beaulieu (Weare, N.H.), who scored six goals in the contest and had a hand in the first four goals of the game when she assisted on Bowen's first tally of the afternoon at 22:48.
Freshman Hayley Napier (Fairhaven, Mass.) added five goals and she and Beaulieu each had an assist, while Bowen added two assists in the win, giving her 50 helpers for the season, which adds to her already held career record.
Napier scored on either side of Bowen's record-breaking goal and the Mustang's led 8-0 before Miranda Jassil (North Branford, Conn.) opened the scoring for the Falcons (1-4, 0-2 GNAC) with her ninth goal of the year.
Beaulieu, Bowen, Napier and Shaylene Hegarty (Townsend, Mass.) all netted within three and a half minutes to send the Mustangs to the break with a 12-1 lead.
Hegarty and Samantha Basler (Plymouth, Mass.) each scored twice in the game, while junior Briana Barker (Westerly, R.I.) assisted on two of those goals in the late first half flurry.
Mount Ida (2-2, 2-0 GNAC) increased their advantage to 21-1 with nine straight goals to open the second half. Sophomore Kaela O'Connell (Watertown, Mass.) got on the score-sheet with two goals and an assist in the final thirty minutes, and Nikki Kinneen (Salem, N.H.) also potted twice in the second half.
Freshman Nikki Kern (Wallingford, Conn.) notched her eighth goal of the year with 2:44 left in the second half for the Falcons, who were outshot 46-8 and committed 32 turnovers.
The Mustangs grabbed 33 ground balls, and Beaulieu won five draw controls, while Kern led all players with six draw controls for Albertus.
Freshman Sydney Fredette (Hudson, Mass.) earned the win for the Mustangs, making three saves and allowing just two goals, while Maria Case (West Haven, Conn.) suffered the loss despite making 14 saves for the visitors.
The Mustangs hit the road for their next two games, though only as far as Boston, when they face Emmanuel on Friday at 7:00 pm, and Lasell, who they meet next week.
Albertus returns home for a date with Rivier at 10:00 AM on Saturday in another GNAC contest.
