Monday, March 11, 2013 (Newton, Massachusetts)- The Mount Ida College women's lacrosse team dropped a nail biting, overtime thriller to the Corsairs of the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth this afternoon on the campus of Mount Ida College by a final score of 12-11. The Mustangs got off to a quick start scoring three out the games first five goals on tallies by Amanda Bowen (Randolph, VT/Randolph Union), and two scores by Molly Sheppard (Brookhaven, NY/Bellport). Taylor Corsano (Bourne, MA/Bourne) got the Corsairs going by scoring the first two goals of the game. With a comfortable 7-3 lead at the break for Mount Ida, the visitors would come out quickly in the second half scoring nine out of the twelve goals scored in the second half and overtime to capture the victory for the Corsairs.
Both squads would surrender several turnovers on the day with the Mustangs handing the ball over 25 times while the visitors turned the ball over 26 times. Both teams were perfect on the day clearing the ball as the Mustangs were golden at 6-6 and the Corsairs were 7-7.
Mount Ida drops to an overall record of 1-2, and has yet to play a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest while UMass-Dartmouth improves to 1-0 on the young season and has yet to challenge a Little East Conference (LEC) foe.
The Mustangs were led offensively by Sheppard who tallied four goals while assisting on one. Alexandria Milot (Tiverton, RI/Tiverton), Amanda Bowen (Randolph, VT/Randolph Union) and Kaitlyn Affhauser (Cheshire, MA/Hoosac) all tallied two goals of their own while Milot and Bowen each added an assist. Briana Barker (Westerly, RI/Westerly) would add a score while Kayla Bravo (East Providence, RI/East Providence) would add two assists for the day.
For the Corsairs, junior midfielder Taylor Corsano (Bourne, MA/Bourne) tallied a game-high five goals and one assist. Right behind Corsano in the scoring column was senior attacker Brittney Enos (East Falmouth, MA/East Falmouth) scoring four of her own while tallying one assist. Freshman attack Colleen Kane (Arlington, MA/Arlington) totaled two goals with one dish. Senior midfielder Devan DePhillips (Basking Ridge, NJ/Hunterdon Central) finished the scoring for the Corsairs adding one goal on two shots.
In the extra period, the Mustangs came out quickly scoring the first goal at the 1:30 mark on Milot's second score giving the Mustangs an 11-10 lead. Just eighteen seconds later, Enos recorded her fourth goal of the day tying the game at eleven (11-11). The contest would eventually head to a second overtime seeing the visiting Corsairs score at the 2:41 mark by Kane and eventually holding off the Mustangs to solidify the win (12-11).
Senior goaltender Kayla Musty (Topsham, VT/Oxbow) would see all sixty minutes in net for the Mustangs while making 13 saves on 25 shots. Senior Angelina Donovan (Medford, MA/Medford) was between the pipes for the visitors making 11 saves on 22 shots.
The Mustangs will have a day off before returning to the field on Wednesday, March 13th for a 1:00 start at Salem State University. The Corsairs will return home on Thursday night for a 7:00 game time versus the Buccaneers of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
