Mount Ida sophomore forward Valerie Martin was one of six players named to this week’s New England Women’s Basketball Association Honor Roll for her efforts in a pair of Mustang victories last week.
A native of Derry, N.H. and a graduate of Pinkerton Academy, Martin averaged 23 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and 3.5 assists on the week, including a career-high 28 points, 15 boards, four assists and a school-record tying 13-of-13 effort from the foul line in a 94-80 triumph over Fitchburg State. Valerie added 18 points, nine caroms and six steals in a 78-54 win over Mount Holyoke, and she shot 62 percent (16-26) from the field in the two outings.
Martin leads Mount Ida in scoring (16.8 ppg), rebounding (9.3 rpg) and steals (4.0 spg) and is shooting 87 percent (47-54) at the charity stripe after the first semester of play, as she has helped lead third year Head Coach Katie Greene’s squad to the best start (6-2) in the program’s 19-year NCAA varsity history.
The Mustangs resume play on Tuesday, January 2nd with a non-league contest at Becker that tips-off at 7:00 pm EST.
