Lions Claw Mustangs in Non-Conference Victory

NEWTON, Mass. – The Emerson Lions used 25 assists led by Charlie Boyle (Scotts Valley, Calif.) who finished with five assists and 23 points en route to a 84-41 non-conference victory over the Mustangs of Mount Ida on Tuesday evening in the Mount Ida Athletic Center.

Mount Ida was led once again offensively by Angie Martinez (Taunton, Mass.) who tallied 19 points and eight rebounds while teammate Katlyn Jesse (Marshfield, Mass.) recorded 10 points on 5 of 13 shooting.

The Lions improve to 3-4 (1-2 NEWMAC) with the win while Mount Ida drops to 1-7 (0-0 GNAC).

After a tight first quarter in which the Mustangs and Lions started off real sloppy with several turnovers in the opening minutes, both teams played a back and forth battle that saw the Lions hold a slight lead over Mount Ida, 17-16 after one quarter of play.

In the opening minutes of the second quarter, after a Martinez missed layup and an Elizabeth Horan (Ashland, Mass.) defensive rebound, Emily Cameron (Culver City, Calif.) knocked down a three to increase the visitors lead to 20-16. The Lions used a Mount Ida team technical foul to their advantage to open the quarter while Boyle hit both free throws off the foul call.

Sierra Ducey (Poway, Calif.) and Eastin Ashby (Pittston, Penn.) used their 13 combined points in the first half to lead the Mustangs 40-22 at the half.

Martinez opened the third quarter with a bucket to bring Mount Ida back within sixteen points of the Lions before Lauren Madigan (Valley Falls, N.Y.) hit a layup while Horan knocked down a three pointer from deep that sent Emerson back on top by nineteen.

The fourth quarter opened with Emerson leading the Mustangs by thirty points in which Ducey and Eastin continued to add to the Emerson lead at 65-30. The Lions used 3 of 8 shooting from three point range in the second half and 7 of 16 overall to run by the Mustangs in the fourth quarter in which Emerson never looked back after leading by fourteen at the break.

Boyle led the way for Emerson with 23 points while Ducey finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. Horan and Ashby finished with 13 and 12 points respectively while Horan also led all players with ten rebounds in the contest.

The Mustangs will be back in action on Saturday, December 12th when they travel to local foe Wheelock College with tipoff set for 12:00 PM. Emerson will be back in action in just two days' time when they are entertained by Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) host Lasell College with game time set for 7:00 PM.
