Mustangs Get a Taste of Division 1 Hoops

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Mount Ida College women's basketball team got a sample of the Division 1 experience on Tuesday evening, as they travelled to face Ivy League foe Brown University. The Bears did not hold back, overwhelming the Mustangs and handing them a 114-28 defeat.

Mount Ida (0-4) now will gear up for their 2015-16 home opener, which is this Saturday at 1:00 pm when the Mustangs host Bay Path University.

Tuesday's game was a homecoming for new Mount Ida head coach Katie Greene, who returned to Brown where she spent the last two years as an assistant coach on the women's side.

The Mustangs got 11 points from Brittany Crosby (Riverside, R.I.), her third time scoring in double figures this year, but were outscored 31-9 in the first quarter and could never bounce back.

Freshman Erika Steeves (Montreal, Quebec) led the Bears with 13 points, shooting 6-7 from the floor, as Brown shot 56% for the game and held the Mustangs to 11-63 (17.5%) while forcing 26 turnovers thanks to 21 steals.

Crosby and junior Angelique Martinez (Taunton, Mass.) each had six rebounds for the Mustangs, with Martinez adding eight points and a block.

Breanna Muir (Wareham, Mass.) had four points and three rebounds, and junior Katlyn Jesse (Marshfield, Mass.) dished out two assists and grabbed five boards.

All 14 players for the Bears scored 4+ points, and the home team scored 31 points in the first, third and fourth quarters while holding the Mustangs to single-digit scoring in each of the four stanzas.

Megan Reilly (Norwood, N.J.), Rebecca Musgrove (Plainview, N.Y.), and Melissa Heath (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.) each scored 12 points off the bench, as Brown's reserves outscored the Mustang bench 76-2.

Reilly dished out a game-high eight assists, while Brown sophomore Kennedy Martin (Los Angeles, Calif.) pulled down ten rebounds and missed a double-double by one point.

Brown stays perfect on the year at 3-0 and stays home Saturday to face non-league opponent Morgan State at 2:00 pm.
