Back to Back Rookie Awards for Angelique Martinez

NEWTON, Mass. -- Mount Ida College freshman Angelique Martinez (Taunton, Mass.) has started the season with three double-doubles and now has two awards from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC).

Martinez was named the GNAC Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week on Monday evening for the second time over the first two weeks of play.

Martinez averaged a double-double for the week, notching over 15 points and exactly 15 rebounds per game.

The rookie finished the three-game stretch off on Saturday afternoon with a 15-point, 23-rebound performance, coming one rebound shy of the Mount Ida single-game record, and helping the Mustangs to a 65-58 win over Newbury. Martinez also had three blocks in the win over Newbury and four blocks and five assists in a one point loss to Daniel Webster, where she led the Mustangs with 22 points and 14 rebounds.

For the season, the first-year center is netting almost 14 points a game on 42% shooting from the field. She is pulling down 12.4 rebounds per game and has 11 blocks and 10 steals.

Martinez and the Mustangs will finish off their pre-Thanksgiving schedule tonight when they take on Wheelock in a game that will be played in Brookline, Mass. on the campus of Pine Manor College.
