ACOSTA NETS 22 POINTS, MUSTANGS FALL TO GOLDEN BEARS

Saturday, December 8, 2012 (Springfield, Massachusetts) - After capturing their fourth win last Thursday over Gordon College, the Mount Ida College women's basketball team dropped a 76-47 non-conference loss to hosting Western New England University Saturday afternoon in Springfield, Massachusetts.  Mount Ida falls to an overall record of 4-5 and has yet to play in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest.  League action will start up after the break, but the Mustangs have one final game before the midway point and will host Fitchburg State University Tuesday evening with game time slated for 6:00 p.m.

Mount Ida was led by senior guard and Captain Evebonee Acosta (Hartford, CT/Bulkeley) with 22 ponits on 8-18 shooting with three dishes.  Along with Acosta, Mustang sophomore forward Jenn Rafuse (Brockton, MA/Brockton) added 12 points, four rebound and four steals on 5-16 shooting.

The Golden Bears were led by Emily Savino's 16 points.  Savino, a senior tri-captain, also had five rebounds, six assists (against no turnovers) and three steals. Senior center Elena Radzikowski had a season-high 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting to go along with four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Junior Katie Eckert and freshman Chelsea Vujs both had 10 points and seven rebounds apiece, and senior tri-captain Shelby Van Huysen came off the bench to chip in 11 points.

Western New England overcame a slow start to take control midway through the first half. With her team leading 13-11 at the 12:54 mark, Savino drained a 3-pointer that ignited a 13-0 run over 4 minutes and 22 seconds for a 26-11 cushion. The Golden Bears took a commanding 37-18 lead into halftime.

The Golden Bears had a strong bench presence by outscoring the Mustangs' non-starters, 26-2. Western New England also dominated the glass, out-rebounding MIC 46 to 26--including 17-8 on the offensive end for a 14-4 lead in second-chance points.
