In the annual season kick-off tournament at Keene State College, the Mount Ida College women' basketball team captured a consolation game victory over visiting York College winning 63-38 Saturday afternoon in Keene, New Hampshire. Friday evening the Mustangs would fall to visiting Mount Holyoke College in a 71-44 loss heading home with an overall record of 1-1.
Saturday's win marked the first victory in first year Head Coach Leah Lipschitz's career after going winless last season at neighboring Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Mount Holyoke led from start to finish in a 71-44 victory over Mount Ida in the second game of the night. Mount Holyoke jumped out to a 16-4 lead on a lay-up by sophomore Amber Legare (Chicopee, MA) and took its biggest lead of the half (38-18) on a baseline three-pointer by senior Angelica Pascual (Lawrence, MA). The Lyons led 39-22 at halftime.
The Mustangs attempted to get back in the game. Sophomore Jenn Rafuse (Brockton, MA/Brockton) found junior Leslie Campbell (Quincy, MA/Quincy) all alone for a lay-up to make it 57-42 with 6:30 to play. But Pascual knocked down a three-pointer in the Lyons' next possession to push the lead back up to 60-42 lead with 5:48 to go.
Legare and Pascual each finished with 21 points to lead the Lyons (1-0). Sophomore Kate Karraker (Morgantown, WV) chipped in with 12 points. Legare and Pascual had 10 and nine rebounds respectively for MHC, who had a wide 52-36 advantage on the boards.
Senior Evebonee Acosta (Hartford, CT/Bulkeley) had 18 points and Refuse pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Mustangs (0-1), who made their third appearance in the KSC tournament.
Mount Ida defeated York (N.Y.) College 63-38 in the tournament's consolation game for the Mustangs first win of the 2012/2013 season.
The Mustangs (1-1) raced out to a 37-12 halftime lead and never looked back. Acosta, who was named the All-Tournament team, scored a game high 24 points and Campbell would add 12 points to lead Mount Ida.
Junior Danielle Dunn (Queens, NY) had 14 points and sophomore Stayce Kay Muirhead (Brooklyn, NY) finished with 12 points for the Cardinals (0-2).
Mount Ida will travel to non-league Westfield State University this coming Tuesday evening with game time slated for 5:30 p.m.
