WOMEN'S HOOPS MAKES IT THREE IN A ROW AT BECKER TUESDAY

Tuesday, November 29, 2011 (Worcester, Massachusetts) - The Mount Ida College women's basketball team, led by a team high 19 points from senior captain Shannon Wood (Gorham, ME/Catherine McAuley/Bryant University), captured their third consecutive victory snatching a 67-47 non-league bid at Becker College in Worcester, Massachusetts Tuesday night.

Mount Ida sees their record climb to 3-3 while the Hawks continue to look for their first win of 2011-2012.  Neither team has yet to venture into conference play as of yet.

After falling behind 6-2 in the opening minutes, the Hawks went on a 7-0 run to take a 9-6 lead with 16:09 to go in the first half, a streak capped off by a running jumper by Haley Ooms (Valatie, NY), who would score ten of Becker's first 12 points.

The Mustangs responded by scoring the next eight points, including a jump shot in traffic by Evebonee Acosta (Hartford, CT/Bulkeley) to take a 14-9 edge. Turnovers plagued Becker for much of the first half as they gave up the ball nine times in the first ten minutes. Mount Ida led for much of the first period, going ahead by as many as 12 points and lead by Wood who finished with ten in the first frame. Mount Ida took a 35-27 lead into halftime.

In the second half, offensive rebounding and timely defense allowed Mount Ida to maintain and build upon their advantage. The Mustangs finished with 14 offensive boards in the second stanza en route to their third win of the season.

Wood spear-headed the Mustang charge with 19 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals playing ever tick for the game.  Senior center Katie Morvan (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) had a double-double with 13 points, a team-high 14 rebounds and three assists. Acosta set the table for the Mount Ida offense with a game-high seven assists along with two steals. Sophomore forward Abbey Fedigan (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) added eight points and three steals, shooting 50 percent from the floor. As a team, the Mustangs forced 26 Becker turnovers.

Ooms had a tremendous effort for the Hawks, finishing with a career-high 24 points while pulling down seven rebounds. Ooms shot 10 of 18 from the field and four of six from beyond the arc, scoring more than half of Becker's points. Tatiana Mojica (Worcester, MA) finished with a double-double, scoring ten points while collecting 14 boards. Chelsea Joubert (Westborough, MA) filled out the box score with nine points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals.

The Mustangs will travel to non-league Wheelock College Saturday afternoon with game time slated for 1:00 p.m.
