WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO EMERSON 81-65

The Mount Ida College women's basketball team dropped their second straight contest since the start of the second semester falling to visiting Emerson College 81-65 in a hard fought Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest Saturday afternoon in Newton, Massachusetts.  The Mustangs fall to 7-9 overall, 0-3 in the GNAC while the Lions improve to 6-8, 2-1 in the conference.

Mount Ida came out hot and motivated building a 16-8 advantage  after a sophomore Katie Morvan (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) bucket with 13:13 to go in the first half.

The visitors chipped away for the next eight minutes cutting the lead to one point after a made three pointer by freshman Amy Sherman (Toronto, Ont./C.H.A.T) trailing 27-26 at the seven minute mark.

The hosts maintain a small margin until the Lions went ahead by one after a lay-in by Sherman with 3:27 to go before the break up 31-32.  After the score knotted twice for the next couple of minutes, Mount Ida eventually rode a two point lead (38-36) into the locker room after scoring the last basket on a jumper by Missy Collins (East Hartford, CT/East Hartford).

It was back and forth for the first couple of minutes of the second stanza until the visitors decided to turn up the offensive heat building a seven point advantage at the 13:17 mark.

The Mustangs kept pace with the Lions and eventually slashed the lead to four after two free throws by Morvan down 53-49.  Mount Ida started to struggle down the stretch while the visitors piled on the offense going up by as many as 14 points with 5:53 remaining in the contest.

It got ugly for the Mustangs at the end of the game and ultimately relinquished a game high 17 point deficit capped off on a three pointer by Lion senior Theresa McCabe (Rye, NY/Rye) up 81-64.  The visitors eventually captured the 81-65 GNAC victory.

Morvan had a team high 16 points with eight rebounds along with six steals.  Senior guard Nicole Casimiro (Lee, NH/Oyster River) added 14 points with three boards while senior's Ashley Boyd (Hanson, MA/Hanson-Whitman) and Cherie Parisi (South Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) chipped in nine points apiece.

McCabe and Lion junior Kathy Andrade (Hull, MA/Hull) each added 19 points a piece with Andrade recording the games only double-double with 10 boards.  Junior Lauren Zaniboni (San Diego, CA/Torrey Pines) chipped in 14 points with seven rebounds and four blocks.
