GAME #2 FINAL:          JOHNSON & WALES 7, MOUNT IDA 1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. --  Sophomore Kristin Frost (Pearl City, Hawai’i) rapped out three hits at the plate and recorded her sixth victory of the season inside the circle to lead Johnson & Wales to a sweep of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Mount Ida by scores of 7-0 in the opener and 7-1 in the nightcap in league games played Friday afternoon at Scotts Miracle-Gro Field.

Frost gave the host Wildcats (19-10, 16-2 GNAC) the only run they would need in the opener with a solo homer (her third of the season) in the bottom of the first, and Johnson & Wales extended that margin to 4-0 in the fourth on an error, a sacrifice fly by senior Alex Fantasia (Framingham, Mass.) and an RBI single off the bat of junior Brenna DuPerry (Cranston, R.I.).  The hosts tackled on two more tallies in the fifth on a run-scoring single from senior Jennifer Corona (Middle Island, N.Y.) and an RBI double by junior Ally Mishol (Longmeadow, Mass.), and a sixth inning error closed out the Wildcats’ scoring in the lid-lifter.

Frost and sophomore Tiffani Semanchik (Flemington, N.J.) each had two of Johnson & Wales’ eight first game hits, as Corona tossed a complete-game three-hitter and struck out nine inside the circle to earn her ninth win of the spring.  Senior Hayley Microulis (Pawtucket, R.I.) and freshman Jill Skalski (Cranford, N.J.) each rapped out doubles in the opening setback for the visiting Mustangs (12-17, 6-8 GNAC), as freshman Carrigan Costello (Wolcott, Conn.) allowed one earned run and fanned three over the first four frames for Mount Ida.

The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in their first at-bat of the nightcap on RBI singles from Frost and senior Katie Rufo (Natick, Mass.), but the Mustangs cut that margin in half in the top of the second on freshman Lindsay Finney’s (Bennington, Vt.) run-scoring single.  Rufo’s two-run double in the bottom of the frame extended Johnson & Wales’ lead to 4-1, and the hosts added two tallies in the third on DuPerry’s RBI single and junior Meghan Gavin’s (Wallingford, Conn.) sacrifice fly before closing out the scoring in the fourth on Rufo’s sixth homer of the season.

Rufo and DuPerry each had three hits to account for half of the Wildcats’ second game hits total, as Frost scattered two hits and struck out five over five innings of work to improve to 6-0 on the spring for Johnson & Wales.  Microulis added another double in the nightcap setback for Mount Ida, as freshman Madeleine Smith (San Diego, Calif.) fanned three over the first three frames for the Mustangs.

Mount Ida hosts Suffolk in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Mount Ida Softball Field beginning at Noon, while Johnson & Wales entertains Simmons in a GNAC twinbill on Saturday afternoon at Scotts Miracle-Gro Field that also begins at Noon.
