NEWTON, Mass. -- Sophomore Scott Skarzynski (Webster, N.Y.) recorded a combined nine kills to lead 14th-ranked Wentworth to a pair of 3-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference men’s volleyball victories over Regis and Mount Ida in a tri-match played Saturday afternoon at the Athletic Center. The opening contest of the day saw the host Mustangs drop a 3-0 GNAC decision to Regis.
Freshman Kevin Devine (Charlotte, Vt.) notched 11 kills, four digs and a pair of service aces in the visiting Leopards’ (13-4, 6-1 GNAC) 25-19, 25-19, 25-14 nightcap triumph, while junior Brian Drouse (Dallas, Pa.) added six kills and pair of digs for the winners. Skarzynski and junior Jesse Lefler (Rochester, N.Y.) each posted five kills in the final outing for Wentworth, which received 20 set assists from freshman Peyton Ranck (Seven Valleys, Pa.), four kills and four digs from freshman Garrett Vermeulen (Fairport, N.Y.) as well as five digs from senior Kevin McPeek (Bethlehem, Pa.).
Junior Brett Southworth (Orange, Conn.) registered 11 kills and six digs in the third match setback for the host Mustangs (8-9, 0-3 GNAC), who received five kills and three digs from freshman Isaac Reed (Keene, N.H.). Junior Nate Gyampo (Providence, R.I.) added five kills and three digs for Mount Ida, which received three kills each from junior Tyler Shinkle (West Deptford, N.J.) and sophomore Andre Foster (Davis, Calif.) along with 22 set assists and five digs from sophomore Kevin Keohane (Jefferson, N.J.).
Senior Colin Ritter (Feeding Hills, Mass.) led a balanced attack in Wentworth’s 25-11, 25-16, 25-15 middle match victory over Regis (4-6, 1-1 GNAC) with 15 set assists, eight kills and five digs, while sophomore Ryan Love (Gaithersburg, Md.) added seven kills, five digs and three service aces in the win. Senior Ollie Oshman (Pennington, N.J.) notched six kills for the Leopards, who received a combined nine kills and nine block assists from the tandem of Skarzynski and fellow sophomore Ryan Engel (Floral Park, N.Y.) as well as 16 set assists from sophomore Augusto Rodriguez-Guerrios (Guaynabo, P.R.).
Junior Drew Beimel (Redondo Beach, Calif.) collected five kills and three digs in the middle match setback for Regis, which received four kills each from seniors Jeff Ramos (Pawtucket, R.I.) and Brett Krahl (Santa Clarita, Calif.) as well as freshman Inelson Alves (Brockton, Mass.). Sophomore Jayson Vega (Ponce, P.R.) registered 14 set assists for the Pride, which received seven digs from senior Chris Fitta (Warwick, R.I.).
Regis opened the day with a 25-18, 25-21, 25-17 sweep of Mount Ida, as Beimel recorded 15 kills, seven digs and two service aces in the triumph. Krahl added 10 kills, two digs and a pair of service aces for the Pride, who received nine kills and four digs from Ramos. Vega collected 31 set assists in the lid-lifter for the visitors, who received three kills from Alves and eight digs from Fitta.
Southworth posted 11 kills, five service aces and four digs in the opening setback for the Mustangs, who received five kills and two digs from Reed. Foster chipped in with four kills and three digs for Mount Ida, which received 22 set assists and three digs from Keohane, two kills and a pair of blocks from Shinkle as well as a combined nine digs from Gyampo and freshman Tyler Dorfman (West Hartford, Conn.).
Mount Ida hosts Emerson in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference outing on Tuesday evening at the Athletic Center beginning at 6:00 p.m., while Regis entertains Lasell in a GNAC clash on Tuesday evening on Higgins Court in Weston, Mass. that begins at 7:00 p.m. Wentworth hosts MIT in a non-league contest on Tuesday evening at Tansey Gymnasium in Boston beginning at 7:00 p.m.
