BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Junior Brett Southworth (Orange, Conn.) posted 21 kills, 19 digs and 14 service aces to lead Mount Ida to a sweep of a non-league college men’s volleyball tri-match from Cooper Union (3-2) and host Pratt Institute (3-0) in contests played Saturday afternoon at the Activities Resource Center.
An unforeseen travel issue put the Mustangs (8-6) in a two-set hole in the opening match against Cooper Union (1-1), which was awarded the sets due to timing penalties, but Mount Ida came back to take the next two sets by identical 25-12 margins before claiming a 15-9 triumph in the fifth and deciding set. Southworth registered a double-double effort of 13 kills, 10 digs and three service aces in the lid-lifter for the Mustangs, which received eight kills and four digs from freshman Isaac Reed (Keene, N.H.). Junior Tyler Shinkle (West Deptford, N.J.), sophomore Andre Foster (Davis, Calif.) and freshman Tyler Dorfman (West Hartford, Conn.) each added a pair of kills and combined for seven digs for the winners, who received 21, set assists, seven service aces and seven digs from sophomore Kevin Keohane (Jefferson, N.J.) as well as seven combined digs from junior Ethan Souza (Acushnet, Mass.) and freshman Mason Leonard (Langdon, N.H.).
Junior Misha Luczkiw recorded eight kills and five digs in the setback for Cooper Union, which received eight set assists from senior Jason Yao as well as a combined 11 digs from juniors Daniel Kim and Christopher E.
Southworth notched 11 service aces, nine digs and eight kills in the Mustangs’ 25-8, 25-14, 25-10 nightcap victory over the host Cannoneers (2-5), as Reed added six kills and seven digs for the visitors. Shinkle chipped in with six kills, five service aces and five digs for Mount Ida, which received five kills from Foster along with 19 set assists, three digs and two service aces from Keohane in posting their second win in the last 13 days over Pratt Institute.
Sophomore Dean Liaw (Ridgewood, N.J.) collected eight kills, and seven digs in the setback for the Cannoneers, who received nine digs and four kills from sophomore Albi Marke (Staten Island, N.Y.). Sophomore Kristopher Patton (Holbrook, N.Y.) added 11 set assists and five digs for Pratt Institute, which received nine digs from freshman Ye Hu Hwang (Seoul, South Korea).
Mount Ida heads to Nashua, N.H. on Wednesday evening to open Great Northeast Athletic Conference play against Rivier at 7:00 p.m., while Cooper Union travels to CIA on Sunday, March 4th for a non-league outing beginning at 1:00 p.m. Pratt Institute heads to Morristown, N.J. on Thursday evening to take on St. Elizabeth in a non-league clash that begins at 7:30 p.m.
