Mustangs Bested in Albany Tri-Match

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The Mount Ida College men's volleyball team took a pair of defeats at the hands of Sage College and Keuka College at a non-conference tri-match hosted by the Gators on Saturday afternoon.

Game 2: Keuka 3, Mount Ida 1

The Mustangs came back with a 26-24 win in the second set after Keuka had grabbed a 25-17 victory, but the Wolves won the third set by the same score as their first and then closed out the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth set.

Mount Ida was led by 12 kills from Brett Southworth (Orange, Conn.), while Peter Griffenkranz (Deer Park, N.Y.0 just missed a double-double with 9 kills and 13 digs, a defensive number matched by Nelson Leadbetter (Athol, Mass.).

Nathan Sprengle (Williamstown, N.J.) put up 28 assists and was in on three blocks, while Tyler Shinkle (W. Deptford, N.J.) added six kills and six digs.

Keuka got a double-double out of Jared Kucko (Horseheads, N.Y.), who had 14 kills and 10 digs, and a game-high 18 digs out of Chris Corcoran (Big Flats, N.Y.).

Game 1: Sage 3, Mount Ida 0

The host Gators closed out the Mustangs in straight sets by scores of 25-16, 25-17, 25-17.

Mount Ida was only able to manage three service aces and 16 kills, 13 of them set up by Sprengle and five coming off the attacks of Griffenkranz.

Shinkle was in on three blocks, and he and Southworth each added three kills, while Leadbetter led the way defensively with 7 digs.

Ryan Guyton (Lockport, N.Y.) paced the Gators with 10 kills, and Casey Fitzpatrick (Haverhill, Mass.) put up 26 assists in the win.

 

 

The Mustangs return home to host MIT on Thursday at 6:00 PM.
