PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Mount Ida College was downed 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-14) on against Johnson & Wales on in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's volleyball action on Tuesday evening as the Wildcats celebrated Senior Night.
The Mustangs drop to 6-21 on the year (1-10 GNAC), while Johnson & Wales improve to 14-13 (6-5 GNAC).
JWU senior Kyle Eva (Charlestown, R.I.) set the schools all-time blocks record with four blocks, three in the final set.
Peter Griffenkranz (Deer Park, N.Y.) and James Ames (W. Hartford, Conn.) led the Mustangs' offense with five kills each. Griffenkranz notched a match-high nine digs and added a block.
Eva also posted team highs of seven kills and eight digs as Johnson & Wales got out to a fast start and never looked back. Setter Cameron Ponce (San Jose, Calif.) staked JWU to a 6-0 lead from the service line to start the match. Eva finished the set by serving nine-straight points. An Eva kill in the second set pushed JWU's lead to 10 points, 21-11, for the first time in that set. In the final stanza, a Mustangs' service in the error gave JWU a 13-4 lead and it grew to as many as 11, 19-8, on another MIC error.
Michael McCullough (Southborough, Mass.) and Jimmy Wessel (DeKalb, Ill.) combined for 12 assists for the Mustangs.
While no player reached double-digit kills for JWU, four players had six or more. Tying Eva for the team-lead was freshman Alex Seda (San Juan, PR). One back were the Malone twins with six each. Raheem added six assists, three aces and five digs. Rakeem also had three aces as well as two blocks.
Mount Ida hosts Emmanuel at 6:00 pm on Thursday evening in their final home game of 2016.
The Wildcats play their final three regular season matches on the road, starting Thursday at Albertus Magnus.
