NEWTON, Mass. -- The Mount Ida College men's soccer team saw their five game losing skid end when freshman forward Mike Porcello (Abington, Mass.) scored the Mustangs' second goal in four minutes to give the Mustangs a 2-1, come from behind Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory over neighboring rival Lasell College on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Mount Ida improves to (5-8-2, 2-5-1 GNAC) while Lasell drops to (1-14, 0-8 GNAC).
Lasell junior Austin Tomasetti (Elmsford, N.Y.) nearly put his third shot of the game away in the 16th minute, but Mount Ida's Shawn Bernardo (Peabody, Mass.) made a defensive save to keep the game scoreless.
Freshman goalkeeper Jackson Burhans (Berlin, N.Y.) made five saves in Lasell's net in the first half as the Mustangs held a 9-7 shot advantage and drew all three of the period's corner kicks.
The Lasers would take a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute as Jonathan Sutton (Orange, Conn.) scored his second goal of the season on a free kick that clanked the right post and past Mount Ida goalkeeper Riley Ford (Guilderland, N.Y.).
Burhans one-upped his save total in the second half, but the visitors scored twice unanswered more than halfway through the frame to take their first win since Sept. 17. Burhans fell to 0-6 on the season, despite an 11-save afternoon that topped his previous high by two.
Freshman Jared Barroso (Central Falls, N.Y.) netted Ida's equalizer, his first goal of the season, off classmate Nolan Reimondo's (Portland, Conn.) corner kick at 71:28.
In the 76th minute, Porcello netted the game-winner for the Mustangs. His third goal of the season came unassisted, on a shot from the center of the box.
Despite the Lasers scoring first in the second half, the Mustangs owned a 15-6 shot advantage and a 7-2 mark in corner kicks. Ford made just one save in the half and finished the game with three en route to his fifth win.
The Mustangs return home for their final two games, beginning next Saturday, October 22nd at 7:00 p.m. against GNAC foe Emmanuel College. Lasell returns to action on Thursday, October 20thwith a 3:00 p.m. non-conference contest at Pine Manor College.
