Mustangs Rout Wheelock to Get Back in Win Column

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Mount Ida College men's soccer team returned to the win column with a 6-0 win over the Wheelock Wildcats in non-confernece action this evening at Winsor Field in Boston.

The Mustangs improved to 3-2 on the year, snapping a two-game skid, with all three of Mount Ida's win this season coming via the clean sheet.

While launching 27 first half shots, the Green and White tallied a pair of goals in the opening stanza. Sophomore forward Juan Brenes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) got things rolling for the Mustangs, finding the back of the net without any help after 32:52 had elapsed.

Over the next eleven minutes, the Wheelock defense continued to keep the things under control, but Mount Ida was able to double their lead to two as Cody Seel (Petersburg, N.Y.) converted a Rob McClafferty (Abington, Mass.) cross with 45 ticks left in the first.

Twenty-one minutes into the second period, junior Jeremy Sayers (Portsmouth, N.H.) used a pass from Brenes to elevate his team to a 3-0 lead. Just under five minutes later, Alexi Flores (Central Falls, R.I.) found a freed-up Wilber Tejada (Chelsea, Mass.) right in front of the net, who then buried the Mustangs' fourth goal of the evening into the top left corner.

With 15:47 to go, senior forward Vlasi Duni (Peabody, Mass.) converted a penalty shot, and to finish up the scoring, Mount Ida deposited their sixth marker in breakaway fashion, thanks to a lonely Julio Barroso (Central Falls, R.I.) on the right side.

Mount Ida was awarded an additional penalty shot in the 85th minute, but a stellar save by sophomore goalie Gary Broad (Shelton, Conn.) would keep the visitors' tally at six.

Broad finished up the night with a total of 22 stops, while Riley Ford (Guilderland, N.Y.) went unchallenged, earning his third win of the season.

Wheelock returns to action on September 14 at 7:00 p.m., when they travel to Rivier College in Nashua, N.H. Mount Ida picks back up again on September 14 as well, when they hit the road for a 4:30 p.m. contest at Mitchell.
