NEWTON, Mass. – Freshman Julio Barroso (Central Falls, R.I.) scored his first career collegiate goal with 3:48 remaining in the second overtime to help Mount Ida beat Rivier University 2-1 and extend their winning streak to six games with another Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer victory.
Barroso slammed home a cross on the ground with a pass from fellow freshman Juan Brenes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) to help the Mustangs improve to 7-2-1 (3-0-1 GNAC). Brenes's cross from the right side came all the way through to Barroso, who was left with a gaping net and plenty of room to plant his foot into the ball and rattle the back of the goal.
Sophomore Riley Ford (Guilderland, N.Y.) made nine stops for Mount Ida, who had a 35-18 advantage in shots and a 9-7 edge in corner kicks. That included a 10-2 lead for shots in overtime for the Mustangs, including 5-0 in the final period of extra time.
The Mustangs got their noses in front before five minutes had elapsed when freshman Alexi Flores (Central Falls, R.I.) fired home his fourth goal of the season with a great strike from the left side. Flores took a pass from Billy Zeba (Lexington Park, Md.) and created space before finishing low and hard to the far post behind junior goalie Gary Archambault (Auburn, N.H.).
Just before the stroke of halftime, the Raiders levelled the score after winning a corner. The ball was delivered in by Alex Armstrong (Wakefield, R.I.), and senior Edward Soucie (South Ryegate, Vt.) got his head on the end of it for his first goal of the season.
Both teams had chances to score during the later stages of the game. In the second half, Carlos Martinez (Chelsea, Mass.) put a shot just wide of the left side of the cage and Barroso had a one on one with the goalie, but put his shot right into the chest of Archambault, one of 10 saves on the night for the Rivier keeper.
Brenes worked his way into space and beat Archambault in the first overtime period, but the ball ricocheted off the post and past the end line for a goal kick.
Raiders junior Ryan Law (Ipswich, Mass.) slid a shot past the post in the late stages of the first overtime period.
In the second overtime, Mustang freshman Nick Vreeland (Berlin, Conn.) put a rising shot just high of the bar with seven minutes to play and Brenes did the same just a minute later.
Mount Ida will take a break from its conference schedule on Wednesday evening with a trip to Worcester for a 7:00 pm game against Clark Univeristy.
The Raiders step out of GNAC play as well on Monday evening when they travel to Lesley for an 8: 00 pm showdown with the Lynx.
