Mustangs Score Early, Extend Win Streak to Three

BOSTON, Mass - The Mount Ida College men's soccer team saw their winning streak extended to three games on Wednesday night by defeating the hosting Lions of Emerson College by a final score of 3-2.

With the win, Mount Ida improves to 4-2-1 (1-0-1 GNAC) while Emerson drops to 2-5 (0-1 NEWMAC).

Mustang sophomore midfielder Jeremy Sayers (Portsmouth, N.H.) knocked in the first goal of the night for the Mustangs at the 6:15 mark when he potted his first goal of the season on the doorstep of Lion's keeper Carter Bowers (Gorham, Me.) giving Mount Ida the 1-0 lead.

Just over eight minutes later, Alexi Flores (Central Falls, R.I.) lined up a free kick from about twenty yards out and fired home a stunning free kick that beat Bowers while giving the green and white an early 2-0 advantage.

With a little over 15 minutes remaining in the first half, J.T. Yager (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) fired in a cross to freshman teammate Nick Vreeland (Berlin, Conn.) who buried home the cross with his head while increasing the Mustang lead to 3-0.

Just before the break, Emerson's own Max DeLuca (Rockland, Mass.) took a feed from teammate Matt Zani (Salem, N.H.) and finished past Mustang netminder Riley Ford (Guilderland, N.Y.) all while cutting into Mount Ida's lead at the half, 3-1.

The second half was a back and forth affair for the Lions and Mustangs as neither team was able to muster much offense.

Emerson was able to hold the hot Mustang offense at bay for the second half in hopes of clawing their way back into the non-conference clash.

In the 68th minute of play, Lion Dan Knight (Chester Springs, Pa.) fired home a point blank shot off a feed from Derek Thomson (Concord. N.H.) beating Ford and inching closer to the Mustang lead at 3-2.

Mount Ida's defense held strong down the stretch while fending off the Emerson attack several times as time winded down and Mount Ida would escape with their third win in a row.

Ford notched two saves on four shots while Bowers notched six saves on nine shots for Emerson.

Mount Ida returns home on Saturday, September 26th when they play host to GNAC foe Johnson and Wales University with kickoff set for 1:00 PM.

The Lions next matchup is at home against NEWMAC opponent Springfield on Saturday as well woth kickoff slated for 3:00.
