Nashua, N.H. – It took a little longer than it seemed it would, but Mount Ida College overcame a late equalizer by Rivier to grab a 2-1 victory in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Raider Field.
Junior Carlos Martinez (Chelsea, Mass.) lined a shot into the upper right corner of the net in the 105th minute to secure the points for the Mustangs after Rivier had tied the game at a goal apiece with just 48 seconds remaining.
Sophomore Elias Mejia (Freehold, N.J.) set up Martinez off a free kick, and the striker knocked home his fourth goal of the season.
The Mustangs got on the board in the 32nd minute as Tyler Grothusen (Ramsey, N.J.) received a thru ball from Martinez and was able to split the defense to sneak a shot past Rivier sophomore goalkeeper Gary Archambault (Auburn, N.H.).
With victory, and the career shutout record for senior goalie Mat Pils (Monroe, Conn.), within arm's reach, Mount Ida conceded a free kick to the Raiders from 30 yards out.
Sophomore Kyle Gambeski (Bedford, N.H.) placed the ball inside the box where junior Peter Juneau (Rochester, N.H.) was able to get his head on it to deflect it over the outstretched arms of Pils to tie the game with 48 seconds to play.
Pils recorded three saves in the victory, while Archambault finished with four saves. The Mustangs outshot their opponents 17-6 throughout the contest.
Mount Ida will host Emmanuel College in a GNAC contest on Saturday, October 4th at 7:00 pm at Alumni Field.
The Raiders will return to action on Wednesday afternoon as they travel across town for a non-conference tilt at Daniel Webster College, 4pm start.
