Saturday, October 21, 2012 (Newton, Massachusetts) - On senior day, the Mount Ida College men's soccer team dropped their fourth straight loss to visiting Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Emerson College Saturday afternoon in a 2-1 heartbreaking loss on Alumni Field. The Mustangs fall to an overall record of 6-9-1 with a league standing of 4-6-0 while the Lions improve to a 2012 slate of 9-7-0, 6-4-0 in GNAC play.
The Mount Ida Athletic department honored senior's Spencer Hastings (Orlando, FL/Timber Creak), Ryan Richardson (Winfield, KS/Winfield), Joseph Casey (Merrimack, MA/Pentucket) and Cody Collard (North Haven, CT/North Haven) for their contributions through the past four seasons in the beginning of the contest.
After stagnant play through the entire first half with neither team able to convert a score, the visitors struck first in the 77th minute of play with junior midfielder/forward Jon Havens (Williamsport, PA/Loyalsock TWP) depositing a shot into the back of the net from freshman forward Adam Halliday (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) for the 1-0 advantage.
Mount Ida countered a minute later on Richardson's second goal of the season on a feed from freshman midfielder Carlos Martinez (Chelsea, MA/Chelsea) knotting the score at 1-1 in the 78th minute.
With seven ticks to go in the final stanza, visiting senior forward Jacob Lawrence (Clifton, VA/Centerville) converted an unassisted goal to give the Lions the 2-1 lead late in the contest. Mount Ida was unable to capitalize through the final minutes eventually handing the visitors the GNAC win.
Mustang sophomore goaltender Matt Pils (Monroe, CT/Masuk) was solid adding eight saves while Emerson net minder Carter Bowers (Gorham, ME/Gorham) added two stops.
Mount Ida men's soccer, who has a conference post-season play-off spot, will end the regular season this Tuesday against hosting non-league Brandeis University with game time slate for 4:30 p.m.
