MEN'S SOCCER STARTS 2012 WITH 1-1 STALEMATE AGAINST LYNX

The Mount Ida College men's and women's soccer program's kicked off the 2012 season this Sunday on the brand new Alumni Field turf stadium just recently completed this past August.

The women's soccer team, under the direction of first year Head Coach Greg Hagan, took a 2-0 loss to visiting Lesley University.  The Mustangs struggled offensively continuing their woes in the attack side of the field only mustering two shots on goal for the contest.  Mount Ida freshman goalkeeper Samantha Basler (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth North) kept the hosts alive for most of the contest with seven saves.

The Mustangs fall to an overall record of 0-1 while the visitors improve to 2-0 on the season in non-league play.

The Lynx got on the board right before the end of the first half (42nd) on a score from junior Casey Decareau (Haverhill, MA/Georgetown) off a feed from junior midfielder Veronica Halen (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) for the 1-0 lead midway through the game.

Halen found freshman midfielder Hayley Wirth (Escondido, CA/La Costa Canyon) in the 74th minute of play making the game a 2-0 advantage in favor of the Lynx for Halen's second assist of the game.  Mount Ida could not answer back offensively eventually taking the 2-0 loss for their first of the season.

For the Lynx, sophomore goaltender Emileigh Lloyd (Middletown, PA/Middletown) stopped the only two shots she saw all day.  Lesley outshot the Mustangs 19-3 for the game and 9-2 for shots on net.

Mount Ida women's soccer will travel to non-conference Newbury College this coming Wednesday with game time slated for 4:00 p.m.

The men's soccer program, under the direction of third year Head Coach Joseph Campbell, knotted a 1-1 double overtime draw against visiting Lesley University in the season opener in Newton, Massachusetts on Alumni Field.  It was the first game for both teams who headed home with a record of 0-0-1 with either having yet to play in any conference action.

In a very physical contest, Mount Ida got on the board early in the 16th minute on freshman midfielder Carlos Martinez's (Chelsea, MA/Chelsea) first goal of the season on a feed from sophomore defender Oscar Lemus (Revere, MA/Revere).  Martinez had a one-on –one with the goaltender and made a very good decision on where to place the ball beating Lynx senior Nigel Leahy (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) on the back post for the early 1-0 lead.

Mount Ida dominated most of the contest holding off the visitors offensively but had trouble recording an insurance goal.  The Lynx capitalized in the 70th minute of play on a garbage goal in front of the net off an uncontrollable bounding ball in the box.  Sophomore Herbin Berreondo (Brighton, MA/Brighton) swung wildly at the bouncing ball that was flicked over by teammate, senior Ari Sinanis (Coventry, CT/Coventry), beating Mustang goaltender Matt Pils (Monroe, CT/Masuk) stalemating the game at 1-1.

Neither team could convert another score through two stale overtime periods ending the contest in a 1-1 draw.

Pils made six saves between the pipes for the Mustangs in 110 minutes of play.  Leahy saw the first half for the visitors adding one save while junior goaltender Nathan Trucks (Guilford, CT/Guilford) saw the rest with two stops.

Mount Ida men's soccer will travel to Roger Williams University this coming Wednesday with game time slated for 4:00 p.m.
